Attrition from the therapeutic radiography program has increased at the same time as applications to undergraduate degree courses have fallen creating a “perfect storm”
The College of Radiographers has just announced (Synergy Magazine, February 2020) that attrition from the therapeutic radiography program has increased at the same time as applications to undergraduate degree courses have fallen creating a perfect storm which will have a potentially critical effect on the future therapeutic radiographer workforce.

“It goes on to state that the attrition rate of students failing to complete the course is now circa 25%”

In our December 2019 blog, “It’s (not) a man’s world” we explored ways to attract more men in to the profession and the fact that CRUK state that an additional 2,000 therapeutic radiographers need to be created by 2027. We also suggested innovative ways in which these issues might be dealt with.
This was also looked at in detail initially in our October 2019 blog “These boots were made for walking”
exploring similar issues but from a slightly different perspective and the problem with attrition rates in both students and qualified staff.
Back in May
2019 we looked at the “role of a therapy radiographer in the age of Artificial Intelligence”
and will the critical shortages of therapy radiographers mean that we are about to be replaced by AI, robots and machine learning systems and that will essentially solve the training, retention and employment problems in our profession by stealth?
Industry led review is urgently required.
It is very apparent that the huge recent advances in the delivery of radiotherapy from a technical and equipment perspective are simply not being mirrored in the recruitment of students who want to be therapeutic radiographers and then keeping them all gainfully employed in the profession. The industry is driving radiotherapy forward at very high speed but recruitment and retention
is not keeping up. This isn’t a recent problem and is one that I have been very vocal about over many years but something needs to be done to change this pattern urgently.
As already stated in my blogs, I am happy to be part of a wider industry review into this issue as I can vouch for the fact that therapeutic radiography is a fulfilling and varied career opportunity. I’m not apportioning blame but it seems to me that whatever the powers that be are implementing, the bare facts seem to reflect that whatever they are doing is simply not working as much or as fast as they would like.

Prostate therapy that can HALVE side effects and promises to revolutionise treatment for thousands of men could be in use within months. The new technique involves ‘intensity modulated’ radiotherapy – in which the radiation is shaped around other parts of the body. The radiologists also inject the prostate with tiny pieces of gold – which show up on scans – to make sure they hit the tumour. Read more.
