24 February 2020
Dear Families,
This week Ordinary Time will conclude as we begin the Lenten Season on Wednesday. During Lent, Catholics are to pray, fast, and give alms. During Lent, many of us try to give up something we love to consume; as a child, my family’s tradition was to give up chocolate, probably because my mother loved it! In recent years, many have focused on doing something extra each day, or working on improving our lives or our relationship with God. I found an interesting list on Aleteia’s website, citing things we can give up for Lent other than chocolate. Some of these are startling, but deserve a closer look. Why might we want to give these up?
- Screentime
- Complaining
- Hot showers
- Shopping
- Snacking
- Listening to music or the radio
- Lazy shortcuts
- Eating out
- Art
- Elevators
Whatever we do for Lent, we are to take these forty days to examine our relationship with God, as we belong to Him.

Progress Reports for the third quarter will be published on Tuesday. These are published through PlusPortals. To access Progress Reports, log in to PlusPortals and click More (near the student's photo). Navigate to Classroom and select Progress Reports. Select the bubble for Combined Reports and then select the most recent date. Note that this may not work in a mobile browser; using a desktop is preferred.
Most students/parents are viewing Progress Reports right on the main page. This information is accurate, however, you will need to drill down into the class pages to find all of the details. Navigating to the official Progress Report is recommended.

On Sunday, members of the Dance Troupe and Apprentice Dance Company joined over 150 dancers from 11 local, independent schools at the Independent Dance Network Annual Festival. Our Mercy dancers had the opportunity to attend classes in a variety of styles ranging from more traditional genres like modern, jazz, and musical theatre to more exotic forms such as Gumboots, a South African style of dance reaching back generations. In addition, some of our girls took part in a mock college audition class led by Vincent Thomas from Towson University where they experienced what it is like to audition for a college dance program and received valuable insight from four current college dance professors. This exciting day ended with a concert where each school had the chance to perform for their peers. Dance Troupe performed Shake ’n Spray, a crowd-pleasing piece choreographed by alumna Unissa Cruse ’10. We are so proud of our Mercy dancers!

Finally . . .
We belong to God, so, despite what we might give up for Lent, or try to do to become a better person, let’s take these forty days to improve our relationship with Him. Our faith tells us, and Scripture does too, that that is all God wants.
Sincerely yours,
Jeanne A. Blakeslee
Principal
