ANNOUNCEMENTS

Mcubed Communities catalyzes faculty collaboration

Mcubed CommunitiesA new online tool called Mcubed Communities aims to connect and mobilize groups of faculty from across U-M campuses so experts can more easily work together to tackle complex challenges or develop innovative curricula. The platform allows faculty members to join up to five "communities," which are defined as groups that form around shared expertise, research goals, academic interests, or any range of scholarship themes. The tool will increase the capacity for collaborative work by enabling discovery of expertise and ideas campuswide.
For each group that forms, the tool will generate a webpage so that teams can easily communicate and share information, and make themselves visible for community growth.
Learn more about the development of Mcubed Communities and its pilot in the College of Engineering, and explore the opportunities to create or join a team.

Sloan Foundation seeks ideas for new areas of science and large-scale funding

SloanThe Alfred P. Sloan Foundation expects to initiate one or more new grant-making programs aimed at driving important advances in seven areas of science: Biology; Chemistry; Physics & Astronomy; Neuroscience & Cognition; Earth Systems Science (including Ocean Science); Interdisciplinary & Other Science; and "Special Topics," including Nanoscale Biophysics, Matter-to-Life, and Visualizing the Nanoscale.
U-M has been invited to submit up to three proposals for either starting a new field of science or advancing an existing area. Researchers should sketch out a vision for a program that could be funded at up to $5-10 million for up to a decade. Here, "program" refers to support for a community of investigators working on complementary aspects of a scientific problem. The proposed research should focus on the physical and/or life sciences listed above, and not biomedically focused. Proposals are due to the U-M Office of Research by March 19; more information and templates can be found on the Limited Submissions application site.

SPARC partners with U-M for drug discovery

SparcA partnership between Michigan Drug Discovery (MDD) and Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company (SPARC) will provide financial support and industry resources to accelerate the development of potential new medicines for a wide range of diseases. Marking U-M's first university-wide partnership with a major international pharmaceutical company in almost a decade, this opportunity will provide up to $10 million in total support toward new therapies for patients.
SPARC intends to provide funding to U-M labs for early-stage translational therapeutic projects in the areas of oncology, neurodegeneration, immunoinflammation, dermatology, and ophthalmology. Support will be tailored according to the needs of each project, with a value of up to $1.5 million over 3 years.
Applications are due March 27, with a leadership information session held on April 23. More information and application details can be found on MDD's website.

NASEM Workshop: Opportunities for Accelerating Scientific Discovery

NASEMThe National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) is hosting a workshop to gather information as part of a consensus study aimed at examining current efforts to develop advanced and automated workflows for scientific research, and identifying promising research approaches to accelerating progress in the effectiveness and utilization of workflow systems and tools.
The workshop will run March 16-17 via webcast, or in person at the National Academies of Sciences in Washington, D.C. View the workshop agenda; registration and more information is available on the event website.

IRIS workshop to focus on big data in education and social science research

IRISThe Institute for Research on Innovation & Science (IRIS) will host a weeklong summer workshop to teach researchers how to use big data tools and resources to advance education and social science research.
This is an introductory-level course aimed at researchers in education and social science fields who are interested in gaining experience working with large-scale, restricted-use data. No prior experience in quantitative data analysis is required. Datasets on topics such as post-secondary educational opportunities, employment outcomes, and the makeup of research teams will be featured during the workshop.
The workshop will be held June 15-19 in Ann Arbor. Priority will be given to applications received by March 15. Learn more and apply.

Early preparations for AAALAC 2020 site visit now underway

AAALACAAALAC accreditation is critical to both the success of our Animal Care & Use Program (ACUP) and to the larger U-M research enterprise. Full AAALAC accreditation demonstrates to our peers, collaborators and funding agencies that the university adheres to the highest national and professional standards of excellence in animal care and use. It is also necessary for ensuring that our faculty members remain eligible for research funding from several external agencies. The Animal Care & Use team anticipates a Spring/Summer reaccreditation visit. Explore how you can get involved.

PIBS to host training grant information fair

The Medical School's Program in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS) will hold a training grant information fair for first-year Ph.D. students on March 17 from 4:10-6 p.m. in 3695 Med Sci II. Any training grant directors who wish to promote their programs to potential trainees may register to attend. PIBS requests that directors bring a current trainee to the event. Contact Michelle DiMondo for more information, or RSVP here

RESOURCE SPOTLIGHT

Business Engagement Center

BECIndustry partners increasingly seek research collaborations with university partners, and there are opportunities to work together for transformational advances in numerous fields. Led by Executive Director Stella Wixom, U-M's Business Engagement Center (BEC) facilitates these collaborations, from connecting industry partners to faculty researchers and coordinating funding opportunities, to negotiating contracts that may involve intellectual property issues, master research agreements or a range of deliverables. Whatever form industry engagement might take, BEC's relationship managers can help faculty and staff navigate the many complexities. Explore the center's Faculty & Staff Portal for resources, such as videos, guidebooks and standard agreements and templates, and check out the BEC's FY19 Annual Report to see why U-M's corporate relations program is a model for universities nationwide.

RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT IN PRACTICE

Bouncing back from grant rejection

In a recent grant writing workshop, a slide titled "Characteristics of Successful Grant Applicants" listed things like expertise, good communication skills and ability to manage people and projects. A researcher pointed out that the most important trait was missing—perseverance. The slides cover rejection and resilience later in the workshop, but he was right that it deserved more prominence as an "essential skill" for hopeful grantees.
Given the success rates for large funders these days, there is about an 80 percent (or more) chance your grant proposal will be rejected, especially upon first submission. You are not alone. Every successful grantee has been rejected, many more times than they have been awarded. It's disappointing, but it's a common experience. And it's imperative to keep going.
Rejection doesn't necessarily mean your work is flawed. It does mean that funding is competitive, agencies cannot fund all the good ideas, and reviewers often are looking to differentiate a pile of good ideas any way they can. But scores and critiques are valuable, and can help you improve your project and your writing.

Consider these tips to get over the setback:
  • Reach out. Share your disappointment with peers—they've been there. Many of them can offer emotional support and constructive feedback.
  • Take some time. Step away from the computer. Indulge in your preferred stress relief, e.g., yoga, a bath, ice cream. Avoid revising when you're still angry or upset.
  • Don't give up. When you're ready, list your reviewers' critiques and address them, objectively and substantively. Look for holistic improvements, such as getting more preliminary data, incorporating different methods or establishing a new collaboration.
  • Get feedback. Ask mentors, colleagues and grant editors to review your revised proposal.
  • Submit, and submit again. Given the reality of success rates, some seasoned grant writers recommend planning your timeline with "resilience" built in—i.e., plan ahead for the extra months of revising and resubmitting, and consider it a bonus if you don't need them.
