Grissom Parents & Students,

The ACT will be given free of charge to all 11th graders on March 10, 2020, during the school day.  On Thursday, March 5, 2020, all 11th graders will report to their assigned testing classroom to complete the demographics portion of the ACT test.  Students should check with their teachers for the assigned classrooms for 11th graders.  Seniors will report to the auditorium during 1A on the 5th and the 10th.  Seniors will receive important information regarding graduation and end of year activities. Freshman and sophomore students should check with their 1A teacher to see if their class is displaced for testing.  Classroom assignment/displacement for testing days will be posted on Naviance and CANVAS this week.

GHS counselors have visited classes to begin class registration for the 2020-2021 school year. Course request paper forms and computer entry are due on March 9, 2020.  Course request verification forms will be sent home March 10-12, 2020. All changes must be submitted no later than March 16, 2020.  This is a hard deadline.
If you have any questions regarding your child’s course requests or credits, please contact your child’s counselor:

The Alabama State Legislators are currently considering a school calendar bill that would be introduced on the first day of the Legislative Session which begins on February 4th.

This bill is similar to a bill that was introduced several years ago that lengthened the summer for students and decreased breaks during the school year. The business and tourism industry and summer camps are again lobbying for bills that would create start and end dates for all public schools. A school calendar should revolve around what is best for student learning and instruction.

If the bill is adopted, it would change our 2020-2021 calendar which has already been approved and published.  This move has the potential to negatively impact our attendance rates as some have already scheduled fall break and Thanksgiving trips.

Also, research shows that students who don't have educational opportunities in the summer time lose months in reading and math over the summer. The increased time off will only increase this loss.  More breaks during the school year help students, staff, and faculty avoid the fatigue that often comes with months of coursework without appropriate breaks.

Ultimately, it should be up to local school districts to decide what is best for the students.
