Good morning
Here's a quote from our friend, Michael Hagedorn, bonsai artist, teacher, author and much more, on his much anticipated book Bonsai Heresy...
"This book has been in the works for some years now. To those who were aware of this and have been asking ad nauseam when it will be done, I now have an answer. Soon."
Michael Hagedorn, author Bonsai Heresy

Continued from above...
'Soon' can cover a lot of ground. Minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, sometimes even years (as in, soon enough your kids will be off to college, so you better start saving now). In this case, when Michael says soon, it's months he's referring to. Probably two, but predicting exactly when a book will arrive from the printers is perhaps best expressed by that great American philosopher, Yogi Berra... "It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future"

Bonsai Heresy
by Michael Hagedorn with Illustrations by Sergio Cuan
"Finally, a bonsai book that corrects the record once and for all!
Not only does Michael dispel long-held bonsai myths,
but he wonderfully weaves personal, often self-deprecating anecdotes into the mix.
Well written, deeply researched, and perfectly timed,
Bonsai Heresy is a must-read for every bonsai enthusiast."
Bjorn Bjorholm, bonsai artist and educator

"Freshly repotted beech, showing the two zones of soil
—the older soil that is a bit green and mossy near the roots, and the newer soil that is gray
(sphagnum moss covering new soil, actually)
The older soil will be our indicator when to water,
and is not covered with new soil on top but is exposed."

I've long appreciated the subtlety
of Michael Hagedorn's bonsai
Michael tends to avoid flash and overstatement,
even in some of his crazy experimental stuff
Here's Michael's caption for this understated bonsai... "Japanese Maple ‘Beni-Kawa’
with an unusual pot choice, an unglazed brown."

Michael's little house in his backyard
(his apprentices live in the big house)
"Kanso means ‘elemental and natural, free of non-essentials’---a good name for this tiny home which I built in 2017.
And the flowers are nice."

"Post-Dated is at once an entertaining narrative... and an examination of the meaning and soul of bonsai that is rarely discussedor even understoodby Western teachers." -

Every two years we get a jolt of bonsai excitement when our copies of the latest U.S. National Bonsai Exhibitions Albums arrive.
This time it's the 6th Album, and it's the best yet. This should come as no surprise, bonsai is still relatively new in North America (and much of the world) so steady improvement is to be expected. However, given the exceptional quality this year, maybe expecting continued improvements is bridge too far. I guess we'll see...

Japanese black pine grafted onto Ponderosa trunk
This photo was taken in December, 2019
Here's part of what Michael Hagedorn wrote about this tree... "This is an earlier work, black pine grafted on a ponderosa trunk. I think it was grafted about 9 years ago.
It’s a small tree, a chuhin at 14”.
Collected years ago by Randy Knight; recently reworked by apprentice John Eads"
