Word from the President
Dear Members,
The Europlanet 2024 Research Infrastructure (RI) is now up and running! The RI project is closely tied to the Europlanet Society and offers a huge range of activities and support for our community, including:
- FREE access to planetary analogue sites and laboratory facilities through its Transnational Access programme (first call open) as well as access to a network of ground based telescopes
- Access to dozens of databases and on-line tools.
- Developing new facilities and exploit Machine Learning in the planetary sciences.
- Networking activities aimed at fostering collaborations across the planetary community and disseminating our results to a diverse range of audiences.
The project is already establishing international collaborations: Russian colleagues have obtained national funding to work us on space weather and Korean colleagues have been granted funding to visit and exploit Europlanet 2024 RI TA facilities.
I am also pleased to report that the community has made a good response to the Horizon 2020 call SPACE-30-SCI-2020: Scientific data exploitation. Several of these projects will, if successful, work with the Europlanet 2024 RI and the Europlanet Society to further strengthen the planetary science infrastructure. The Society aims to foster such collaborations and ensure the planetary science community is supported by income from the European Commission and other transnational funding agencies.

Meet the Europlanet Society's Executive Board
Ricardo Hueso is a lecturer at the University of the Basque Country, where he studies planetary atmospheres. During his career, he has had the opportunity to work on ESA missions and in the analysis of data from NASA missions, but also extensively with amateur astronomers. These astronomers have proved to be key actors in many fascinating discoveries such as in understanding the storms of Jupiter and Saturn, or the atmosphere dynamics on Neptune.
Ricardo is convinced that the Europlanet Society will play a crucial role in shaping the landscape of planetary science in the years to come, and is in particular working to promote amateur astronomy in our planetary science community.

Europlanet 2024 Research Infrastructure

Launch of the Europlanet 2024 Research Infrastructure
Europlanet has launched a 10 million Euro project, the Europlanet 2024 Research Infrastructure (RI), to provide open access to the world’s largest collection of planetary simulation and analysis facilities, as well as a global network of small telescopes, data services, and community support activities. Europlanet 2024 RI aims to widen participation in planetary science and provides the infrastructure to address key scientific and technological challenges facing the planetary research community.
The project is funded through the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme (Grant Agreement No 871149) and will run for four years from February 2020 until January 2024.

Europlanet 2024 RI – Transnational Access
Call for Proposal – Deadline: 5 May 2020
Europlanet 2024 RI announced its first call to support researchers with free access to five planetary analogue field sites and planetary simulation and analysis laboratories within 24 distributed facilities.
The Transnational Access (TA) programme supports all travel and local accommodation costs of European and international researchers in order to conduct their research in accredited facilities and field sites.The TA programme can support up to two researchers for each visit and covering a time-period ranging from a few days to several weeks. Europlanet 2024 RI – South Korea participation
We are delighted to report that the Korea Basic Science Institute (National Research Facilities Equipment Center – NFEC) will provide funding for South Korean scientists to visit Europlanet 2024 RI laboratories and field facilities during first TA call. In subsequent calls (from Autumn 2020 onwards), new TA facilities in South Korea will become available to European researchers in a reciprocal arrangement. Both these initiatives effectively increase the number of TA visits that will be granted during the Europlanet 2024 RI project.
This official participation will be confirmed at EPSC 2020 in Granada, where Europlanet 2024 RI and NFEC plan to sign a Memorandum of Understanding.

Abstract submission is now open for the Europlanet Science Congress 2020 (EPSC2020), which will be held in Granada, Spain, from 27 September to 2 October 2020. We encourage you to submit an abstract before 13 May 2020, 13:00 CEST.

ESA JWST Master Class Workshop
Torun, Poland, 11-13 March 2020
A JWST master class workshop will be held on 11-13 March 2020 in the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy, and Informatics of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland. The workshop is organised in close collaboration with Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands, and strongly supported by ESA.

EAI Summer School
Torun, Poland, 19 - 26 August 2020
The European Astrobiology Institute will organise a summer school on the formation and evolution of planetary systems and habitable planets in the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Informatics of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland. The program of the school will include joint lectures - from protoplanetary discs and exoplanets to geologic features of the surfaces of Earth and Mars - and afternoon hands-on sessions in small, interdisciplinary groups.

Transnational Access Tours
To celebrate the launch of the first Transnational Access Call of Europlanet 2024 RI, we have started a weekly tour of some of the laboratory and field sites that you can visit - FREE - to carry out your research. Videos show the spectacular glacial and volcanic environments of the Iceland field site and the Planetary Spectroscopy Laboratory at DLR Berlin. You can also take a video and VR tour of the wind tunnel at Aarhus, which simulates low-temperature, low-pressure enviroments of Mars and other planetary bodies.

Italian Planetology Congress

More than 150 italian scientists gathered in Padua for the annual Italian National Congress for Planetary Science. The Conference was co-organized by INAF, the National Institute for Astrophysics and Università di Padova and the Europlanet Italy Hub was represented in the poster session.

The Cosmic Cast Podcasts
A year ago today, the Isotope Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry group (University of Manchester) started working on an Earth and planetary science podcast, called The Cosmic Cast. Rosetta and the chameleon comet
A grand synthesis of Rosetta data has shown how its target comet repeatedly changed colour during the two years it was watched by the spacecraft. The chameleon comet’s nucleus became progressively less red as it made its close pass around the Sun, and then red again as it returned to deep space. Read More>>>

Call for input from the Social Media team
Welcome to Europlanet's new social media team! Sarah Roberts and Helen Usher will be supporting @europlanetmedia channels. Their aims are for the channels to inform, enthuse, engage, encourage and celebrate planetary science and they have the following requests to help them do this.
"We see our role as two-fold - publicising the work of Europlanet and also helping members of the community by curating and circulating information of interest. We are part-time, so need your help in making this an effective service:
- Please let us know early what you are doing, when, and how we can help eg publicising regional hub meetings, calls for applications for visits, workshops, competitions.
- Pictures/videos are particularly useful for getting more attention. We can automatically circulate reminders as deadlines approach too.
- Please task someone in your team to at minimum take photos/videos of events and provide a little narrative that we can use. Ideally think about your team live tweeting/Facebook posting during the activity.
- Confirm a few hashtags for the event beforehand so that participants can be encouraged to share their live experiences and to easily collate posts.
- Follow-up is great too – what did participants think? what comes next? what’s the final outcome? We’d love to celebrate your successes!
- What would you like to see in our tweets and on our Facebook pages? Reminders of conferences and submission deadlines? Other interesting events and activities? We welcome your views and insights into people/organisations we should follow and information we can share.
