Creative Chronicles No.1

Welcome to our first ever Chronicle! I'll be keeping it short as you're probably bogged down in all those new hobbies you've taken up!

Each month I'll be aiming to share a little of what goes in and what comes out of Made Below.

We have lift-off!

I'm so excited that the first small batch is off the workbench. It’s a classic collection of footstools, benches, ottomans and bay window seats, all designed and handcrafted here in Manchester, UK. They're colourful, distinct and most importantly, made with the highest quality materials and skills.

Footstools

It's hard for me to choose a favourite but this is up there. What's not to like? I love the pattern, fabric and colour of this one.

Ottomans

Another favourite! Upholstered in neo mint wool with our unique ripple effect. I think you have to be pretty brave to own an upholstered coffee table/ottoman but what the heck, just go for it.

Benches

The word 'bench' seems pretty boring to me but I can't find another word that adequately sums these up. If you can, then please, please tell me. What I like about the (insert interesting noun) is its utility. These have a little punch of pizazz and add a little wow to your hallway or bedroom.

Admiring the fabric

I love working with this wool. It looks beautiful and just behaves itself on the machine and in my hands. I'm so proud to be using fabrics from an amazing Yorkshire mill that has a heritage going back of hundreds of years.

What I've been listening to in the workshop
I'm a Podcast/Audible connoisseur. I love them. Hopefully you'll try my faves and let me know what you like. Or please recommend something to me.

Help is here.

This Humane Technology podcast exposes the hidden designs that have the power to hijack our attention, manipulate our choices and destabilise our real-world communities. Refreshingly, this fascinating podcast doesn't just critique, it offers solutions and ideas to change things.

Free advice?

As a new business, I'm often pestered by marketers who claim, for a fee, they can supercharge my social media presence. It's actually pretty easy to do this stuff yourself. I've found maybe two or three people that are genuinely passionate about helping other businesses and they kindly give away a lot of their advice for free. One of my favourites is the Grow with Soul podcast by Kayte Ferris. I've binged on these like a Netflix box set.

How to enjoy your lunch break
Often a tricky one, if you're self-employed

Those were the days

Yes, this is me, back when I would nip out of the workshop for a quick paddle at the local water park. Although looking back at this bleak photo, I'd rather stay in lockdown. I'm a big fan of skiving off for a bit. It's good for you and I can't wait to do it again.

I was gifted a bento box

It's too easy to rush your lunch when you work for yourself. So I'm now aiming to eat my bento box lunch with chopsticks; enabling more conscientious and slower eating!

Marvellous Makers I've discovered this month
Whilst trawling through Instagram etc, "growing my audience", I often come across some amazing makers, artists and creative geniuses. Here are a few I like...

Alan Fears

The art of Alan Fears never fails to make me smile. I love the colours, naivety and humour and is it me, or do many of his subjects look like George Michael?

What do you think?

Textile storytelling

Mr. Finch makes some incredible fairytale models from textiles. I'm a fan of the slightly darker content such as his spiders, moths and mushrooms.
