March
Sermon Series

 "Called to More"

Recently at my house there has been a bird relentlessly trying to fly through our window to - I assume, get in from the cold.  All day long the bird will keep flying into the window, over and over and over - with no luck, thankfully.  I feel bad for the bird, and I've tried talking to him or her to "stop it, you're going to get hurt" - but the poor thing doesn't listen to me.

The bird is also driving my cat crazy - who is making strange cackling sounds when the bird is trying to fly in.  I tell her that she "wouldn't survive five minutes out there".

Do you find yourself in a rut sometimes, unable to stop doing something that you know:
1) Isn't helping you
2) Is probably hurting you
3) Is definitely not what God would want you to be doing

This Lenten series explores the actions, habits, and systems that separate us from God and looks to the cross of Jesus to discover that we are called to so much more.  When we sin, we "miss the mark" of where God wants us to be - and God wants so much more for us!  Over the next few weeks we are going to explore some traps we find ourselves in, and look to Christ for the freedom and renewal we need.

3/1
Called to Abundant Life
John 10:7-11

No one is perfect. We all live in a broken world and, like sheep, we have gone astray. Thankfully, the story doesn’t end there. We were made for something better – the abundant life made possible in Jesus, the good shepherd who shows us the path to the life we are called to live.

3/8
Facing the Dark to Reach the Light
1 John 1:3-10

To find true healing, we have to face the hard truths. Part of the healing process is realizing that something is broken. This brokenness is the darkness that overshadows our lives. The good news is there’s freedom in the light.

3/15
You Are Not Your Sin
John 8:1-11

Sometimes we feel like what we have done is who we are. When we mess up, fall short, do the wrong things, it is not who we are. We are not defined by what we’ve done. We are the children of a loving and forgiving God.

3/22
There is More
Mark 1:35-39, Philippians 3:12-16

When life gets challenging, we have a choice to either fall back into the sin that is so enticing and easy for us, or to persevere and trust that when we follow Christ, we will live into even more than we have ever imagined.

3/29
The Gods We Make
Exodus 32:1-14

Sometimes we allow things in our lives to become more important to us than God, distract us from God, and even come between us and God. These are the gods we make.

Our music program is led by our Minister of Music, Grayce Armstrong, a Sacred Music graduate of Westminster Choir College.  You may contact Grayce by email at music@debowsumc.org.  DeBows UMC is blessed with talented people who love to praise God.  We pray for each other and give back to the Lord the blessings we’ve received.  We welcome newcomers to join our music ministry and share and grow their talent for God’s glory.

Rise Against Hunger
Campaign

Saturday, March 21
Join the GNJUMC in Packing a Half Million Meals

Pack a half million meals in one day?  Nothing is impossible with Jesus.

Be part of a meal packing event taking place in several different locations across the GNJUMC with the goal of packing 500,000 meals in one day to feed the hungry.

There is a poster in Fellowship Hall with details.  This is a worthwhile event to volunteer for and
will be a "feel good" moment!  Registration has been made for our church for 10 people at St. Mark's UMC in Hamilton Square from 12:00 to 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 21.  Please sign up on the sheet by the poster.  If more than 10 people sign up, we can easily change the total people attending; (that would be great!).

If you have any questions, please see Anita.

Grocery Shopping Cards

Every week during Fellowship Time, you have the opportunity to purchase grocery store shopping cards for either ShopRite or Stop & Shop.  This is a convenient way to pay for the food you buy at the grocery store and at the same time support the ministries of DeBows UMC.  The church makes 5% of all shopping cards sold. You may see Sue Hayward or Karen Stillwell to purchase the shopping cards on any Sunday.

We are taking orders for our Old Monmouth Candies Easter Fundraiser.  Order forms will be available on the sign-up table outside of Fellowship Hall.  Orders are due by Sunday, March 15 and candy will be distributed on Sunday March 22.  Easter is on April 12.  You may contact Sue Hayward for more information.
A bulk Scrip Gift Card order will be placed on Sunday, March 22.  Order forms can be found on the sign-up table outside of Fellowship Hall.  Gift cards will be received before Easter.  See Sue Hayward for more information.
