POP Montreal, the non-profit, artist-centric international music festival based in Montreal, Canada, returns to SXSW to showcase up and coming acts that generate buzz both locally and abroad.

6:30 PM Shay Lia made her solo debut with the release of « Blue », a timeless soul/R’n’B ballad produced by both BADBADNOTGOOD and Kaytranada. i-D, BETC France, Beats 1 and BBC Radio noticed her because of this track. The same year, she performed at Coachella and AfroPunk both being her first performances ever.
8:15 PM Bodywash signed with Luminelle Recordings in January 2019 and released Comforter on August 30th, to acclaim from Clash Magazine, Bandcamp Editorial, AllMusic and more. They celebrated the release with an east coast tour and a sold out show at POP Montreal, before heading back into the studio to dream up new soundscapes for 2020.
9:15 PM Basia Bulatis a three-time Polaris Music Prize finalist and has been nominated for three Juno Awards in her native Canada. In recent years she has also been selected to perform at landmark events such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, and Newport Folk Festival. As a touring artist, she has shared stages with acts including Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Destroyer, Arcade Fire, St Vincent, Neko Case and Sufjan Stevens.
10:15 PM Land Of Talk’s latest LP Life After Youth was nominated for Best Alternative Album at the Juno 2018. This album garnered praise from multiple media outlets such as Exclaim!, NPR, The Globe and Mail, Mother Jones, Under the Radar, KEXP and CBC – to name a few. Following a career of much success – 3 full-length albums and 2 EP’s – all critically acclaimed – the original band are currently working on the 4th studio album in Montreal, QC – where they started from.
11:15 PMHaviah Mighty recently released Polaris Prize-winning album, 13th Floor (2019), her most fully-realized project to date - making history as the first hip hop artist and the first black woman to ever receive the award. Garnering overwhelming praise from the likes of Pitchfork, Billboard, Hot New Hip Hop, and Lyrical Lemonade to name a few, Haviah continues to carve out spaces that boldly defy gendered expectations for women in hip hop.
12:15 AM Naya AliMontreal-based Ethiopian rapper Naya Ali landed like a breath of fresh air onto the Quebec hip-hop scene. With a flamboyant personality and unparalleled flow, Naya Ali is able to transport us into a scathing world, sometimes dark, sometimes quiet, but always uncompromising. Since the release of her first EP, “Higher Self,’ the emerging artist has drawn looks and attention from some major hip-hop players, even abroad.
1:15 AMLegal Vertigo's debut album Tragic Future Film Star is an experimental pop album for those who like 90's Leonard Cohen, Shabazz Palaces, Julee Cruise, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Joni Mitchell, etc. In the past 2 years he has produced over 7 albums including most recently Operators' (Dan Boeckner) Polaris Award Nominated album Radiant Dawn.
POP Montreal International Music Festival is an annual non-profit curated cultural event that champions independence in the arts by presenting emerging and celebrated artistic talents from around the world. Launched by friends and colleagues in 2002 from the collective impulse to create a meaningful and vibrant cultural festival, POP Montreal is now entering its 19th year as a permanent fixture on the international music circuit and the Montreal festival map.
