Women's History Month in North Dakota

Josephine Gates Kelly. First woman in the United States to be elected Tribal Chair (SHSND 1952-5040).
Are you aware of how Women's History Month started? On February 28, 1909, the Socialist Party of America organized a Women's Day in New York City. This event honored working women and commemorated a strike of the previous year when women pushed for better working conditions. This humble movement soon spread to become an international event each March that morphed into Women's History Month by the 1980s. Each year the National Women's History Alliance announces a theme. The 2020 theme is "Valiant Women of the Vote" in recognition of the centennial of the 19th Amendment.

You can find resources for your teaching needs in the State Archives including everything from personal papers and records of homemakers clubs to oral histories of women elected to statewide leadership positions. In addition, sections of North Dakota Studies curriculum cover the history of the women's suffrage (right to vote) in North Dakota. This year, National History Day in North Dakota has a special prize opportunity of $250 at the senior level and $150 at the junior level for projects on the history of women's suffrage. For more information, contact state coordinator Dani Stuckle, at dlstuckle@nd.gov.
