Love Your Neighbor: Man Finds $43K Inside Used Couch and Returns it All

Howard Kirby had bought himself a couch from the Habitat for Humanity store in Ossowo, MI. The couch was uncomfortable so he unzipped the cushions only to find a bundle of cash tucked in them.

He contacted the store to find out who had donated the couch and then he happily gave back the money to the original owner. Kirby's honesty is an example to all of us, he returned all this money when he had no legal obligation to do so, would you?

Assistive Technology Tip of the Month: Google Meet

Are you looking for an alternative way to connect with colleagues from one building to another? Google Meet is a video conferencing app that allows you to schedule an online meeting, invite other participants via a meeting code and share your screen. Google Meet can be a powerful tool for students and staff. We have some students in our schools using Google Meet to view their teacher’s screen during instructional time. We also have some students using Google Meet to participate with their peers in the classroom when they are homebound. Click the link below to watch a short presentation about Google Meet and to see it in action in one of our classrooms.

Pass It On: 4th Graders Can Get a Free National Park Pass for Their Whole Family

If you have a child in the 4th grade, then your entire family is entitled to a free National Parks pass this school year through the “Every Kid Outdoors” program.

The pass admits all of the children and adults in your vehicle. If you arrive by bike, then it admits all the children under 16 and up to three adults. Unlike yearly passes, it expires at the end of the school year on August 31, 2020.

To get one, you just need to go to this government site. 4th graders can score a printable paper pass by answering two multiple-choice questions about what they’d like to do in National Parks and entering their zip code. Educators can also apply to get paper passes for everyone in their class.

Go to everykidoutdoors.gov for more information.

Shout Out!
Going the Extra Mile

"Shout out to Desiree Henke, special education para at Roosevelt Education Center!  She is always going the extra mile for ALL the kids in elementary, and she even finds time to leave notes of appreciation for staff to make everyone feel special. She is kind, thoughtful, and takes care of our students as they were her own. We have a very special school, a very special staff, and Desiree is one of the best!"

Minnesota School Board Appreciation Week

School board members help make decisions that have a tremendous impact on our children’s future and the quality of life in our community.

School board membership is one of the most personally demanding forms of public service. Board members spend countless hours preparing for and participating in monthly meetings and devote a great deal of time to studying education issues and laws, and listening to the concerns of parents and teachers. In fact, they never are completely “off the job” as board members.

School Board Member Recognition Week is being celebrated Feb. 17-21 throughout Minnesota. Please join us by saying thanks to our school board members during Minnesota’s School Board Recognition Week.

Help us get the word out about all the great things happening in our schools! We want to showcase events and stories visually through as many forms of media as possible. Use this form to submit 742 news, story suggestions or upcoming events.
