OPIRG Carleton (Ontario Public Interest Research Group) is a student-led, student-funded non-profit based at Carleton University. We aim to research, educate and provide action on social and environmental justice using a non-hierarchical and consensus based space for students to organize.

A working group is an open collective of individuals that choose to work on a specific issue or campaign. OPIRG Carleton supports several working groups including Anakbayan Ottawa, Books 2 Prisoners, Herongate Tenant Coalition, Students Against Israeli Apartheid, The Leveller, and Yoga Unity. Ask us if you want to learn more or join a working group!

Books 2 Prisoners: Monthly Meetings

Books to Prisoners sends free books to prisoners across Canada and the US, and responds to letters from prisoners. As an abolitionist group, they believe that education and human contact are important to maintain mental health while incarcerated.

B2P meets on the second Wednesday of every month. We are always looking for volunteers so contact us if you would like to join.

Migration, Movement & Freedom: A Zine Workshop

Join the Sanctuary City Ottawa Ville Sanctuaire TODAY (Wednesday, February 19) from 7-9 p.m. at the Ottawa Art Gallery (50 Mackenzie King Bridge) for a collective zine workshop exploring how to build the city we want.

In this FREE zine workshop we’ll be sharing information on the various immigration pathways (both regular and irregular). Our discussions will focus on the issues around the concept of resilience in migrant communities and the othering that happens outside and within communities. The facilitators and participants will co-create a zine made up of these discussions.

Anti-Oppression Training with Jade Byard Peek

Swing by 3224 Richcraft Hall at Carleton University on Sunday, February 23 from 1-3 p.m. for a FREE anti-oppression workshop hosted by the CUSA Gender and Sexuality Resource Centre and facilitated by Jade Byard Peek (she/her). This training is a perfect opportunity for anyone looking to learn more about how to apply anti-oppressive theories of race, gender, and sexuality in their practical, everyday lives.

YouthSpeak! Poetry Slam

Join us on Monday, February 24 for the much anticipated YouthSpeak! Slam at 6:30 p.m. in room B125 (basement) of the Ottawa Public Library / Bibliothèque publique d'Ottawa Main Branch (120 Metcalfe Street).

Open mic available at the start of the slam! Sign up at the door. FREE. YouthSpeak! drop-in writing sessions take place every Monday in the basement of the Ottawa Public Library, Main Branch from 5-8 p.m.

Still Rising

Come through SAW Gallery (67 Nicholas Street) on Thursday, February 27 for two workshops and a reception celebrating Black brilliance and resilience while recognizing that our community is made up of individuals who face personal and systemic barriers to preserving their own wellbeing on a daily basis.

Still Rising is a two-part event that intends on celebrating the resilience of Ottawa's Black community while recognizing that needing to be resilient is exhausting.

Please keep in mind that while the reception is open to all members of the community, workshops are a closed space for Black, African, and Caribbean folks to share, learn, and heal.

Air Force Blacks Photography Exhibit is a FREE event taking place on Saturday, February 29 from 6-11 p.m. at SAW Gallery (67 Nicholas Street).

This photography exhibit is created by Liz Clarke and powered by Freedx, in-partnership with Youth Ottawa and RBC Bluesfest.
