Elder Corner

By Craig Tinder

In the last couple weeks, Iron Men (the Saturday morning men’s group) has been discussing how to battle temptation. Just about everywhere in the NT, scripture says that we are to be proactive against sin and Satan (James 4:7). First, we need to know our particular sin patterns (James 1:14). Some of us are too passive (like Adam in the Garden of Eden) while others of us are too proud (1 Cor 13:4). We need to understand our temperament and study our past experience to know when and where we are the most vulnerable (Galatians 6:1). We then need to stalk our sin habits so we can be actively killing the sin by putting it on the cross. We need to replace destructive habits with those that lead toward Christ (Gal 6:14).

In Matthew 22:37, Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This Saturday, Iron Men will be using our minds to understand habits so that we can love God with our actions and even our thoughts (2 Cor 10:5). If we seek to have our identity in Christ, we should seek to build habits that will make us more Christ-like while breaking habits that bring us away from Christ (often, but not always, sin). Every habit (good and bad) has 4 components: Cue, Craving, Response, & Reward (Atomic Habits by James Clear). For example, say I struggled with anger when I’m stuck in traffic. The cue may be getting cut off by another car, the craving/emotion I’m feeling is self-preservation, the response is yelling & honking, and the immediate reward is letting the other driver “have it”. Of course, honking creates a cue in that individual which may spark a sin habit in that person. Instead, what if I decided that when the inevitable “cutting off” happens, that will be the cue for me to pray for that person? Over time, and with accountability, if I carefully apply this prayer habit, everything changes. Instead of my daily drive pulling me away from Christ, the commute becomes an opportunity to come closer to God and pray for those God is “bringing” into my life.

Too often we dismiss our sinful habits or, perhaps even worse, choose to be ignorant of them. What sin patterns do you need to confess and combat? What is the regular sin or negative habit that is entangling or hindering your Christian race (Hebrews 12:1)?

Pray for Sarah Tener | Grayslake, IL | Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of NE IL

Email: sarahteneralto@gmail.com

Focus: Sarah is the Assistant Director of CEF. Child Evangelism Fellowship’s focus is to evangelize boys and girls in the community with the Gospel, to disciple them in the Word of God, and to establish them in a local church for further growth in Christ. CEF provides evangelism training and sets up kids clubs in the community to help the church reach their community for Christ. Through the Good News Club in the public elementary schools and the summer 5-Day Clubs in neighborhoods, CEF seeks to bring Christ’s word to children where they live so that they can hear the Good News.

Prayer Requests:
  • That God would put it into the hearts of local Christians to share the Gospel with those around them
  • For multiple teacher trainings that are happening late February through March as well as the teen trainings happening in May and June
  • For my trip to our headquarters in Missouri, February 24 through March 7 for a teacher training course
  • That the children coming to Good News Clubs would put their trust in Christ
  • For teens to teach summer 5-Day Clubs this summer and for Christians who could host them
