Lately, I've been thinking about what it means to be an "expert."
When it comes to all things UPPERCASE publishing, I'm definitely the expert on that! There is literally no one else in the world producing a magazine like mine or doing things quite like me (for what it's worth, sometimes I wonder if that's a good thing or not!) It's a very specific enterprise, though, and a lot of my expertise about the minutiae of my business doesn't apply to anyone else and is very mundane. (ie database integrations, logistics, etc.)
But there are skills, techniques and mindsets that I've developed through the past decade of experience that are universal. I am confident in saying that I am an expert in getting projects accomplished, curating content, sticking to schedules, having a discerning eye, making creative connections through ideas and people, inspiring others' creativity and making decisions.
These are all areas of expertise that are valuable beyond just UPPERCASE. Over time, I've realized that my unique set of skills is of interest to others—beyond just what I produce in print. That insight into my process of curating, editing, designing, producing, promoting, fulfilling and growing a creative business can help others achieve their goals and dreams.
Some day, I would like to create my own e-course about these things. But for the present, that's why I'm partnering with Marie Forleo (the expert on business and marketing through her B-School program) and Bonnie Christine (pattern design and Illustrator skills expert for her Surface Design Immersion Course.) For each, I am offering my time and attention as a mentor to students who sign up via my recommendation, along with a subscription to the magazine and access to the UPPERCASE Circle.
Yesterday, I hosted Bonnie Christine in the UPPERCASE Circle for a Q+A about surface design, from making collections to making a living. She was a very insightful guest and, as she herself says, she's an open book! This is part of her generous approach to teaching.
