There is a called Congregational Meeting this Sunday, February 23, immediately after worship to vote on a slate of elders for the class of 2022.

Elder Nominations for the Class of 2022
Grace Presbyterian Church

Nominating Committee Members:
Natalie Adams, David Cannon, Lee Keys, Bill Shoemaker, Sandy Wolf

Seeking new leaders for the church is prayerful and thoughtful work, and I am thankful for the Nominating Committee’s intentionality with this year’s process. Each of these four individuals seeks to bring experience, wisdom, faithfulness and creativity to our Session.

Yet, we must also acknowledge our shortcomings as we continue to pursue greater diversity in our leadership. We believe and are committed to building a session which reflects the beautiful diversities of gender, gender expression, race, age, ability, ethnicity…God’s dream!  So, while these individuals share many common demographics, please know that inclusivity and diversity are critical to our mission and ministry, and will be very much on the minds and hearts of our Session as we seek to follow God’s leading.

Take a moment to get to know the individuals who have agreed to accept the nomination to serve.

The congregational meeting to vote on the slate will follow the worship service.
Blessings and peace,
Cathy
Brad Fisher recently retired after 40 years in marketing and public relations for the DCH Health System. He continues to work for his daughter’s media company, which operates a newspaper in Selma, and he has taught at The University of Alabama’s Advertising + Public Relations Department for 15 years. Brad has been a member of Covenant/Grace for about 40 years, and has served on the session several times, including a stint as clerk of session. Brad Fisher’s administrative background and leadership skills will be an asset as he facilitates the church’s personnel committee.
Sherry Kimbro retired last spring after 32 years as an athletic trainer with The University of Alabama. With time on her hands, Sherry has become even more deeply involved with Grace. Behind the scenes, she arranges flowers, designs creative visuals for our worship services, teaches middle school Sunday School, volunteers with both Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels and serves on the Worship Committee and Congregational Care Committee. Sherry is inspired by the message found in 1 Peter 4: 8 – 10 which encourages us all to use the gifts which God has given us, serving one another in love.
April Lane, a mental health counselor in private practice, has been involved with University Presbyterian and Covenant Presbyterian, separately and in collaborative projects (i.e. Anti-racism, Central American Sanctuary, Presbyterian House/Campus Ministry, Tuscaloosa Presbyterian Cluster worship), since her family moved to Tuscaloosa in 1981. April describes the courtship and marriage of these two churches to become Grace as one of the most meaningful events in her recent life.  April appreciates the connectional nature of the Presbyterian Church USA, and has enjoyed attending Presbytery meetings and serving on the Commission on Preparation for Ministry. Inclusivity, social justice, equality, and meaningful worship that leads to action are some of her passions. April serves on the Worship Committee; Finance Committee; and Mission, Peace & Justice Committee.
Bill Shoemaker knows the Grace facilities like the back of his hand, its blessings and its occasional headaches. Although he claims to be retired, he works a full schedule for Baymont Inn, doing repairs and maintenance. On his day off, he is often at Grace, checking on any issues that arise. As chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, Bill believes deeply in Christ’s call to extend welcome and hospitality to members, friends, and community guests. As we begin working with architects to make plans for renovations, we believe Bill’s continued leadership on the session will be integral to a smooth and informed process.
