Kia ora Kāpiti

On Saturday our community got its first behind-the-scenes look at Te Raukura ki Kāpiti, with a fun and busy open day. We've got updates from the animal management team, and the latest on our playground updates, which are under way! Check out below for all the latest news.

Vehicles on our beaches

Kāpiti beaches are shared spaces and as a community we want everyone to be able to enjoy them safely together. Vehicles are not permitted on most beaches in Kāpiti unless launching or retrieving boats in an authorised boat launching area.

This year we will be reviewing the Kāpiti Coast District Council Beach Bylaw and we want to hear how you think our beaches are being managed and protected.

Have your say

Beach Bylaw review

The first stage of our Beach Bylaw review is drawing to a close, and so far over 1500 people have completed our short survey – a great result!
It's not too late to have your say on this important issue. Our beaches are a taonga and an important part of Kāpiti's identity, so if there's something that you'd like to see addressed be sure to contribute. You can find the survey on our website, or at your local library.

Te Raukura ki Kapiti

Unveiling Te Raukura ki Kāpiti

After years of fundraising and construction, the community got its first behind-the-scenes look at Te Raukura ki Kāpiti on Saturday with a well-attended public open day.

Te Raukura has been a significant project with wide community involvement, and the Council has contributed $1.6 million to its construction. The opening season is already showing this is an exciting community asset for both emerging and established creative artists, with a bright future.

Work under way on playground updates

We've started on the changes to six playgrounds throughout the district. Work at Ōtaki is almost complete, Waikanae will be completed by 29 February, Paraparaumu by 7 March, and Paekākāriki by 8 March. As always the weather could slow things down, but we've made good progress so far.

Visit our website to take a look at the full final designs.

Kāpiti Sports Bank

The Kāpiti Sports Bank will give easier access to free sports gear, accepting good quality equipment from the public and distributing it in our community using a card system.

Join Mayor Gurunathan and our volunteers at the opening in Mazengarb Reserve on Saturday 7 March from 2pm–4pm.

Local sports clubs will be giving kids the opportunity to try their hand at new sports, too!

Visit our website for more information.

Animal Management Team

Animal Management team update

Did you know we receive over 3,000 animal-related service requests each year? You’ve probably seen our officers out responding to your calls, offering advice and guidance to dog owners, and conducting proactive patrols to prevent incidents. We also investigate complaints and take enforcement action when necessary.

Our team work seven days a week and recently had additional training to help them deliver other services for Council. These include proactive beach and freedom camping patrols, monitoring parking, and responding to abandoned vehicle complaints.

This means we're even more accessible, agile and better able to meet Kāpiti's needs.

Penina and Vic from The Sewing Clinic are on a mission to save pre-loved clothing from ending up in landfill! With support from our Waste Reduction Levy Fund, they run the Repair Café for anyone needing help with mending, alterations, or an upcycling project.

You can find them at their Lindale classroom on Tuesday mornings between 9am and midday.
