Consumer and Carer Recruitment Reminder

This year continues to bring an unprecedented increase in requests from Queensland’s health sector to recruit consumers and carers to partnership roles. The quality and number of these requests clearly acknowledges the undeniable value of involving everyday Queenslanders in all areas of work to improve and build a better health system for everyone.

However, high quality recruitment takes time. We advise allowing at least FOUR weeks before your next engagement partnership opportunity commences to find the right consumer/s and carer/s for you through our Statewide Consumer Network.

As Health Consumers Queensland enters a particularly busy period, we are grateful for your assistance in bearing these time frames in mind.

Thank you

Carer representative for Adolescent Extended Treatment Centre Steering Committee

Carers with experience or interest in child and youth mental health are invited to submit expressions of interest for a representative position on the Adolescent Extended Treatment Centre Steering Committee.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Department of Health is committed to ongoing engagement and participation of health consumers following the Government’s response to the Barrett Adolescent Centre Commission of Inquiry report.

As part of the 2017-18 State Budget, the Government committed to deliver a new Statewide Adolescent Extended Treatment Centre (AETC) on The Prince Charles Hospital Campus, to be owned and operated by Children’s Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service (CHQ).

CHQ, in collaboration with the Department of Health, other key Government agencies, and health consumers, has established an AETC Steering Committee to ensure effective governance of the AETC commissioning process.  A carer position on the committee has recently become vacant.

COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP

The Committee is to ensure advice and direction is provided to support timely and successful delivery of the AETC, and the necessary systems and processes to deliver a quality, safe, and inclusive mental health service.  The Committee is chaired by Frank Tracey, Chief Executive, Children’s Health Queensland, and meetings are held on a monthly basis.

There are currently two consumer and two carer representative positions on this committee. This expression of interest is for a vacant carer representative position.

ROLE OF THE CONSUMER

Health Consumers Queensland is working closely with Queensland Health, the Barrett community of former patients, family, friends, young mental health consumers, and carers in Queensland to make sure consumer and community needs are considered during the establishment of the new AETC.

In addition to sharing experiences from a carer or family member perspective, carer representatives will:

  • Provide information and feedback to the group
  • Provide direct advice to inform developing solutions/decision making
  • Provide feedback to be considered and influence future solutions or decision making.

Have a voice in the way that people are cared for in a medical emergency

Closing date: close of business on Tuesday, 31 March 2020

The Emergency Medicine Foundation is inviting a health consumer representative to influence and promote positive patient, family, consumer and community experience and outcomes for emergency care.

The Emergency Medicine Foundation is:

  • funding innovative Australian research to improve patient care in a medical emergency
  • dedicated to translating research outcomes into real and practical benefits, which help save lives in medical emergencies
  • supporting emergency health professionals – doctors, nurses, paramedics, retrieval staff and allied health professionals and work with hospitals, patients, government, NFP organisations and the wider community
  • delivering better and more effective health services through research to improve healthcare, health outcomes, save lives and money.

ROLE OF THE CONSUMER

  • To partner with a unique, non-profit organisation to promote positive patient, family, consumer and community experience and outcomes from emergency care, through robust research and making change happen.
  • Lead and engage with their Board and Executive to help shape the future of EMF.
  • Be a guiding voice for an organisation that has limited consumer involvement and take it to a place where the consumer voice is pivotal, underpinning the work they do.
  • As the first consumer representative with EMF, this role will shape the future of consumer partnering and EMF’s future. In many ways the role will be shaped by you, and may include attending meetings, providing advice on documents – such as strategies and research initiatives, and also representing EMF.

WHO IS IT FOR?

The ideal candidate:

  • You don’t need to be research savvy, but you must be an experienced consumer representative.
  • You will be confident working and communicating with healthcare professionals, board and executive members.
  • You enjoy being part of a small, values driven, dynamic team.
  • You will have the ability to think strategically and clearly articulate your feedback in person, by phone or online meetings.
  • Strong consumer voice with a flexible approach that will help EMF shape its future.
  • Consumers located in rural, regional and remote communities are very welcome and highly encouraged to apply (access to meetings will be supported by online video conferencing).

Getting paid for your consumer rep work with the Department and HHSs

Queensland Health is using a new finance system. Health Consumers Queensland is aware that the new finance system has caused a few problems for some consumers - including not getting paid or waiting a long time to be paid.

Health Consumers Queensland has created an on-line survey to find out if you are having any problems with getting paid for your consumer rep work.

We will use this information to show Queensland Health's Finance Branch how many consumers this is affecting, the common problems encountered, and to help them find solutions that work for consumers.

However, in the short-term, if you are waiting to be paid and it's been more than one month, please get in direct contact with your key contact on the project/committee that you are involved with. Let them know of the delay in payment and ask them to follow this up on your behalf. You may also want to ask for timeframes about when it's likely to be sorted.

Please feel free to share this with other consumers.

The survey is open until Friday 29 February 2020.
