First Friday - 'Get Heart Smart' with World Ironman Champion Guy Leech (6 Mar)

For the past 10 years,Guy Leech has been known as Australia’s “#1 Fitness Guy”, having been involved in setting group fitness world records, creating a raft of fitness related products and programs and working with some the country’s leading health organisations like Diabetes Australia and The Heart Research Institute of Australia.

In Feb, 2016 that all changed for him when one of hist best mates “Chucky” collapsed after one of their paddling sessions. The ambulance arrived around 10 minutes after the phone call, and they quickly set up the defibrillator as Guy continued CPR on Chucky.  Once they had him in the ambulance they took him directly to the Royal North Shore Hospital.  He was in the best possible care.  Chucky was fit, he was healthy. Unfortunately, Chucky never recovered and passed away after a week in hospital.

He suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).  He was not alone.  In Australia, around 30,000 people suffer a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) each year.  Only around 6% of these people survive, because there wasn’t a defib close by – if you can get a defib on the patient in the first three minutes you increase the chance of survival to over 70%!
One of life’s most haunting questions I ask myself is “What if?” What if I had a defib in the car, What if I the cafe nearby had a defib? What if I could have put Chucky on a defib in that first 180 seconds?  If any of my other fit and healthy friends, my kids, my wife were to suffer from a Sudden Cardiac Arrest?  Where is the nearest defib right now?  Does anyone know how to use it?

Everyday, fit and healthy people suffer from Sudden Cardiac Arrest.  Whilst good diet, exercise and managing stress can reduce the incidence of heart disease, Sudden Cardiac Arrest can strike anyone, any time.  When it does, over 90% of these people will die.  Chance are the ambulance won’t get there in that first three minutes.  If a defib is put on the victim in that time we increase to the chance of survival to over 70%!

Guy’s mission now is to help people become Heart Smart by making sure that we have defibs available, and people are trained in how to use them confidently in the case of Sudden Cardiac Arrest.  The reality is we can get the defib on the patient in the first 180 Seconds, to give them their best chance of living.

Come along to not only hear about Guy’s experiences but also see a demo on how to use a defibrillator.

Sunday 15th March  – Family Firefighter Day on the Water

The Alfred's is proud to be supporting the Firefighters Family Sailing Day with Above and Beyond Boating. The Club is a hub for the RFS Firefighter Family Day on Sunday 15 March 2020.
Across Australia our dedicated fire fighters are stretched to the limit with the terrible bushfire season. They are working tirelessly to keep our homes, friends, family, wilderness and wildlife safe, often at a huge cost to themselves and their family.

The Firefighter family day on the water initiative was created by Above and Beyond Boating to provide a way for the boating community to give back to the men and women who are battling blazes across our country.
Firefighters and their family can register to attend one of the events and enjoy a day out on the water with one of the volunteer skippers who are lending their boats for the experience.

We currently have 17 boats registered to take families out from RPAYC and 2 registered families. The maximum number of boats is limited to 30 at each hub.  All registrations and queries or changes to registrations should be fielded back through Neil and the team at Above and Beyond Boating. ABB will link the boats and families and arrange a meet and greet and introductions at the club with a planned departure at about 1000hrs.

On arrival at the club will be providing a breakfast BBQ – sausage sizzle / bacon and egg roll for the any boat owners and the families. Boat owners are being asked to supply a light lunch for the families at their expense.

On the 1st of May, the club will be hosting a Sydney gathering of the Shag Islet Cruising Yacht Club followed by an Estuary cruise. All members of Shaggers is a  "Vice Commodore" representing an individual Nautical Location ie an Island, Islet, River, Bay, about which they have some knowledge so as to be able to provide advice or assistance to other "Vice Commodores" However, in SICYC, your social commitments could be your most demanding responsibility.
We were fortunate to be able to meet up with some of the Shaggers on the Pittwater to Dunk cruise and look forward to being able to repay the hospitality.
The current plan is for the

First Friday Recap - Farewell to Tom Spithill

There was a great turn-out for Tommy’s farewell with a number of great stories about his time at the club. However the highlight of the evening was definitely the bull riding with some club members more successful than others in taming the beast.

From the Gallery - Ginger Beer Cake

This month we are starting a new section in the Cruising Newsletter – From the Galley. Whilst the good old fashioned barbie is always a favourite, sometimes you need some variety whilst cruising. In this section each month we will feature a recipe from an Alfreds Cruising member that is easy to create whilst out on the boat. Anyone with a favourite recipe is encouraged to share it. Please email to us at cruising@rpayc.com.au
The first recipe comes from the Bundaberg Brewed Drinks. It is really easy to cook in your boats oven using a few readily available ingredients.
Ingredients
• 1 ¾ cup plain flour
• ¾ cup caster sugar
• 1 cup golden syrup
• ¾ cup Bundaberg Ginger Beer
• 1/3 cup vegetable oil
• 3 eggs
• 2 tsp baking powder
• 1 ½ tsp ground ginger
• ¾ tsp ground cinnamon
• 2 tsp dark brown sugar for decoration

Cooking instructions
• Step 1 - Preheat oven to 150 C.
• Step 2 - Beat all ingredients except brown sugar with electric mixer. Grease a loaf tin with butter and line with baking paper. Pour the mixture into the loaf tin and sprinkle top with brown sugar.
• Step 3 - Bake in oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Check with skewer. If it comes out dry, remove from oven and allow to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before turning out and serving.

Tip of the Month - First Aid Expiry Check List

In your first aid kit you have a number of items that have expiry dates. Expired medicines may not be effective or may even be harmful. Instead of having to check through all the items in your kit an easier way is to create a spreadsheet with the expiry dates to make it easier to check. Those with some excel skills can even automate the calculation to highlight the items that are out of date.
Other items on the boat with expiry dates such as flares and EPIRB can also be added to the list.
