Call for nominations: Steven Krauwer Awards 2020
The call for Steven Krauwer Awards is open. In 2020, Steven Krauwer Awards will be given in the following categories:
- Early career CLARIN Researcher. The intended goal of this award is to promote a young person or a group of cooperating young persons below the age of 35.
- CLARIN Achievement. The intended goal of this award is to recognize the work of a person or a group of cooperating people.
These awards, named in honour of Steven Krauwer (the first executive director of CLARIN ERIC) are given annually to outstanding scientists or engineers in recognition of outstanding contributions toward CLARIN goals in the areas of language resource building, tool or service development, exemplary use cases, user involvement or knowledge sharing.
If you know someone eligible for nomination, please contact your National Coordinator by email and describe how this person meets the criteria for the selected award.

Tour de CLARIN: Norway
This month ‘Tour de CLARIN’ visited Norway. The Norwegian national infrastructure for language resources and technology is called CLARINO. Read about CLARINO's involvement in the university curriculum and the interview with Yvonne van Baal, a PhD student in linguistics, who has successfully used resources and tools developed at the CLARINO Text Laboratory.

CLaDA-BG to create first version Bulgaria-centered knowledge graph
The partners in CLaDA-BG research e-infrastructure had a face-to-face consortium meeting at IICT-BAS, Sofia on 30-31 January 2020. Besides reviewing the achievements and the challenges of the previous year, the main focus and discussion was on the possible approaches of integrating data from universities, academic institutions, museums, libraries, within a connected and contextualized framework, with the aim to create the first version of the Bulgaria-centered knowledge graph. This knowledge graph will consist of events, persons, locations, organizations that are interrelated.
The first version of the Bulgaria-centered knowledge graph is expected to be ready by next Autumn.

CLARIN-IT & Languages and Cultures of Ancient Italy
A National Project of significant Interest (PRIN) entitled "Languages and Cultures of Ancient Italy: Historical Linguistics and Digital Models" has just started at the Institute of Computational Linguistics (ILC) "A. Zampolli" - CNR. Activities at ILC will focus on aspects of modeling and developing digital tools for the online fruition of linguistic and historical data of the epigraphic Restsprachen of Ancient Italy. The project will contribute with data and tools to the CLARIN-IT infrastructure and its activities will pave the way to the involvement of the historical linguists community, as well as to themes and goals shared with the ILC4CLARIN center.

Successful CLARIN Newcomers’ workshop held in Utrecht

Last January, participants from Spain, Belgium, Belarus, Ireland, Slovakia, UK, Iceland, Cyprus and Croatia attended the new edition of the CLARIN Newcomers’ workshop that was hosted in Utrecht. The workshop covered important aspects like how to set up a national consortium and a technical CLARIN centre, and provided information on Knowledge sharing, User Involvement, Legal and Ethical issues and more.
The purpose of the newcomers’ workshop is (i) to give an introduction to those who just joined CLARIN, and (ii) to prepare those who wish to join.

Call for Participation - Workshop Twin Talks 2: Understanding and Facilitating Collaboration in DH

The main objective of the workshop is to get a better understanding of the dynamics on the Digital Humanities work floor where humanities scholars and digital experts meet and work in tandem to solve humanities research questions.
This workshop is special because part of the talks are submitted and presented by a humanities researcher and a digital expert (Twin Talks). Another part of the talks (Teach Talks) are held by people with experience about how cross-discipline collaboration is or can be addressed in curricula or other training activities.

2nd Call for Papers: Citizen Linguistics in Language Resource Development workshop
16 May 2020, Marseille, France (at LREC2020)
The CLLRD 2020 workshop will provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to explore and discuss the issues, advantages and challenges of using crowdsourcing as a method for the creation of language resources. Additionally, the workshop will introduce LanguageARC (https://languagearc.org), a new Citizen Science for Linguistics web portal for collecting language data and judgements. The workshop will be held as part of LREC2020.
The paper submission deadline is 2 March 2020.

Save the date and spread the word! The Helsinki Digital Humanities Hackathon #DHH20 dates have been confirmed: 27 May- 5 June 2020.
The Helsinki Digital Humanities Hackathon is a chance to experience an interdisciplinary research project from start to finish within the span of 1½ weeks.
As a CLARIN and DARIAH summer school, the event will be truly international welcoming applications from all over Europe. This year we are prepared to sponsor around 20 participants from outside Finland with flights and accommodation.

Summer School “Digital Tools for Humanists”

The 4th edition of the Summer School is organized by the University of Pisa, under the direction of the Laboratorio di Cultura Digitale, and supported by CLARIN. The topics in this edition will include Natural Language Processing, Digital Philology, Digital Editorship. The minimum requirement for enrolling is a Bachelor degree. No specific prerequisites are requested, except for some familiarity in the use of computers and an interest in Digital Humanities.
The registration fee for the Summer School is 250€. The deadline for registration is 11 May 2020.

Call for Proposals: 'Disrupting Digital Monolingualism' workshop

There has been increasing attention in the past few years to the challenges of multilingualism in digital practice. It has been widely accepted that digital ecosystems have a ‘language and geocultural diversity’ problem – at present they have a strong bias towards firstly English, and then a small group of (mostly European) languages.
This two-day workshop brings together leading researchers, educators, digital practitioners, language-focused professionals, policy makers and other interested parties to address the challenges of multilingualism in digital spaces and to collectively propose new models and solutions.
The workshop aims to strengthen connections between numerous overlapping digital and languages-driven conversations and initiatives.

The Centre of Computational Linguistics and CLARIN-LT center at Vytautas Magnus University invite you to submit papers for the 9th international conference Human Language Technologies - the Baltic Perspective (Baltic HLT 2020).
This year, the conference will include a special subsection on language learning resources, with a focus on Baltic languages, as lesser used and taught; as well as any similar languages with rich morphology. The subsection is targeted at scholars working on corpus-based language learning, developing corpora/tools/resources for language learning and teaching, and applying NLP for the purposes of teaching and learning foreign language, among other topics.
