Tell Me More About The Scroll of Esther

מְגִלַּת אֶסְתֵּר
 

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו וְצִוָּנוּ עַל מִקְרָא מְגִלָּה

10 facts to enlighten our Jewish mind:  

1. It is known in Hebrew as “Megillat Esther”.
2. Megillat Esther is one of five scrolls in the Bible.
3. The story of Purim and the salvation of the Jews of the Persian Empire is told in the book of Esther.
4. The Scroll of Esther is chanted in the synagogue on the eve of Purim and again the next morning.
5. The word Purim means lots and refers to the lottery that Haman used to choose the date for the massacre.
6. Before reading the Scroll in the night, one first recites three blessings.
7. The Megillah, which is called an “Iggeret,” is folded open before being read.
8. The Book of Esther is chanted according to a special cantillation used only in the reading of the Megillat Esther.
9. It is a widespread custom for the listeners at the Megillah reading to make noise, usually with special noisemakers called graggers, or in Hebrew ra’ashanim, whenever Haman’s name is mentioned.
10. The Festival of Purim has now been celebrated for twenty three centuries, year after year, generation after generation.
