Laser Cladding of engine parts

Dear *|HTML:FNAME|*

I hope to steel a minute of your time, as I have been looking forward to sharing this repair case and video with you.

During a planned docking in Landskrona (Öresund Dry Docks), MarineShaft went onboard the ferry M/F Stena Saga with our laser cladding equipment.
CASE:
Wear at sealing surfaces at cylinder holes on welded frames of a Wärtsilä Pielstick engine.
This repair concerned one of four main engines

The surface tolerance was too narrow - app. 6 mm under original dimension - to use planing.

REPAIR
MarineShaft suggested to weld up the worn surfaces with our laser equipment and machine the surfaces back to original dimensions instead of using space rings. This could all be carried out in-situ.

Onboard M/F Stena Saga we installed our laser equipment with all safety processes in mind – covering by curtains, warning signs and safety glasses.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the advantages of using laser cladding is to avoid high heat input to the surrounding areas of the frame. Also, this technique is accurate.

We used the filler material Inconel 625 for rebuilding the surfaces. Inconel 625 is perfect for reconstruction. Each layer thickness is 0.8 mm

After welding up the surfaces, we installed our mobile machining tool for re-machining of the 12 surfaces at the cylinder holes.
M/F Stena Saga went out of dock as planned.

Now, Stena Line will evaluate the repair and decide if this will be carried out on the remaining 3 main engines during the next dockings.

We thank Stena Line and their team on-board for a great co-operation.

Please find a short video from the repair below.
