ASC and ESIS Alumni Completes Extreme Challenge

By Joanne Burns, Head of School at ES International School.

Sam Bencheghib is an environmental activist who just completed an ocean to ocean, six month, 3,000+ miles run across the United States, from NYC to LA, in order to raise awareness about plastic pollution in the oceans.

Sam is an ESIS / ASC Class of 2015 Alumni. In his senior year at ESIS, he was the President of Student Council, and worked actively to promote environmental awareness and other worthy causes through his role. Notably, while still in 11th grade, he organized a ping-pong tournament for Haiyan, with the proceeds going to victims of the Typhoon that struck earlier that same year. Then only 16 years old, Sam petitioned the Head of School at the time: “When I heard that more than 10,000 people were feared dead, whilst over 12 million people have been directly affected and 1.9 million people have become homeless in the aftermath of the typhoon and do not have a bed or roof to sleep under, I wanted to utilize all my resources in order to make a change, to somehow help those millions of people.”

Making a Difference Across Campus
 A Donation to SOS Galgos
Both the Elementary and Middle School students worked hard these past months designing activities and raising money for the charity "SOS Galgos". Anna Clements, the mother of a 10th grade student, was delighted by the generous donation of over 100€ presented during the Elementary Assembly on February 7th. Students were introduced to a dog who was recently rescued and awaiting her forever home in England. Overall, this experience has increased the empathy and caring of the students and teachers alike.

Helping the Homeless
Some Middle School students from the Change Makers class came up with a very clever way to help those in need. They realized that they had a talent for dancing and wanted to share their skills with others in order to raise money for charity. They held a dance workshop that raised 100€,  and they are using that money to create hygiene kits for the homeless in Barcelona. Ms. Sandilands and Mr. Gaudin will accompany the students when they deliver the kits to a shelter in the city. It is amazing what a few young people with an idea can do!
Student Council Update
Every year our Student Council members organize a variety of events throughout the year to raise money for various charities. They decided to donate the left over money from last year, about 500€, to two dog shelters in the area. So far, this year they raised 545€ in the raffle from the Thanksgiving Luncheon. That money was donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Thanks to that (an other donations), a child named Elena went to Disneyland Paris to meet her favorite Disney characters. She sent us a video saying thank you. She also said that she is recovering well. Here is the link to the video she sent us:     http://bit.ly/MensajedeElena.

Appreciating Culture in Barcelona
Teachers and Students in front of Hospital Sant Pau.
On Tuesday 18 February our 11th and 12th grade students enjoyed an educational visit and guided tour at the Sagrada Familia. The Sagrada is perhaps one of the most beautiful and unique buildings in the world. The architect, Antonio Gaudi brings the beauty of outdoor nature inside the basilica and for our students living in Barcelona it is an iconic place not to be missed.  In the afternoon, we also visited the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau. This complex of beautiful buildings was formerly a hospital and one of the buildings still houses the hospital beds and old hospital equipment. The art nouveau architecture is beautiful and interestingly, inside the main building, all of the walls are curved, as it was believed that corners harbored germs!
Player's Lounge Now Open All Day
We are delighted to announce that the common room for students was officially opened on Monday, the 17th of February. During the opening, students, teachers, and coaches came together to explore the space, listen to the common room rules (developed by our student council president, Hovhannes Madanyan), and enjoy drinks and tapas. The students have been using the room daily and particularly enjoy watching movies together. ‘The sofas are really comfortable and it’s so good to be able to come together as a group in our free time,’ said a 12th grade student.

ESIS Has Got Talent!
Our annual Talent Show took place on Friday, February 14th, and was an exciting event organized by our Student Council. Dancing seemed to be the major theme displayed by our students this year, and we saw acts from Elementary, Middle, and High School. The 5th grade class presented a dance and music medley that was so well done they received a standing ovation from the crowd.  There was also a guitar solo played by David Arapeteyan as well as well as an acted scene by some of the residence girls. Overall, it was a delight to see such talent from our amazing students!
