Bulletin #011 - 20/02/20

A40 London Road Corridor Improvements Project
National Productivity Investment Fund

The project seeks to improve journey time reliability and ease congestion on the A40 London Road through the delivery of a range of improvements including junction changes, introduction of new traffic management technology, bus stop improvements and the optimisation of bus lane locations.

This phase of works is focusing on junction construction and builds on the work already completed to date including  improvements already made including new CCTV, refurbishment of all signalised pedestrian crossings, variable message signs and queue detection sensors. The stretch from Easton Street to Loudwater includes junction improvements at the Gordon Road, Hatters Lane, Micklefield Road with Ryemead Way and Gomm Road junctions.  When all works are fully completed, it will mean better and more reliable journeys for all who use this key route in and out of the town centre.
*IMPORTANT INFORMATION*
A short section of A40 London Road will be closed overnight w/c 2nd March (23:00 – 05:00) between Hatter’s Lane and the retail park access east of the roundabout.

UPCOMING RESURFACING WORKS AT HATTER'S LANE JUNCTION

Areas of the A40 London Road around Hatters Lane junction will be resurfaced in order to tie-in new areas of widened carriageway with the existing carriageway levels. In order to reduce the length of time these works impact the network, both day and night shifts have been planned from Monday 2nd March until Friday 6th March.

Resurfacing will be undertaken utilising lane closures during the day (09:30-15:30), but due to working widths at certain pinch points, it is necessary to close the road and this work will be undertaken overnight. The road will be closed from 23:00 after bus services have finished running, and the road will reopen from 05:00 the following morning. Further information on the road closure and HGV diversion route can be found here. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience these upcoming works may have. Every effort has been made to phase and plan works in the safest, most efficient, and cost effective manner.

Recent Works

Rayners Avenue junction

Work at the signalised junction of Rayners Avenue/ London Road/ Frederick Place began in January and is nearing completion. The introduction of new technology will mean the junction can work in co-ordination with others along the corridor and be optimised to adapt to traffic conditions. There has been a slight delay to programme for the commissioning of the new permanent signals, but this is now planned for Monday
24th February.
Hatter's Lane roundabout

Work to widen London Road near Hatter’s Lane roundabout will provide a bus lane across the roundabout, extending to the existing inbound bus lane. Since the last bulletin update, works have been focused on:
  • Widening of the London Road on the northeast corner of the roundabout:
              - Existing kerbs were removed, and new alignment installed;
              - Base layers of widened carriageway have been installed;
              - Vegetation clearance at the back of the footway;
              - Drainage works.
  • Ongoing works with statutory undertakers for diversion of utilities around the junction.
Upcoming Works and Traffic Management

Please see the below tables for a summary of work at each junction for the upcoming weeks:
* All works will be carried out during off peak hours (09:30- 15:30) unless otherwise stated.
