   Lets Talk: About Seeing Jesus
By Conference Minister Diane Weible

Growing up I was always intrigued by the “Jesus” plaque in my grandma’s house. It was one of those pictures that when you first look at it, it just looks like nothing more than a bunch of lines. You have to learn to look at it in a new way in order to understand its meaning. Once you are able to do that, almost like magic, the word “Jesus” becomes clear and visible. The thing that was so cool about it was that once you have seen it, you cannot un-see it. After the first time I saw the word, every time I would walk by it, I would say to myself, “Jesus,” because it was so clear and obvious.

That’s how I’m feeling about a lot of things these days. I’m seeing racism, sexism, homophobia, and a disregard for the impact of climate change on our most vulnerable siblings. I’m understanding how these issues (and more) are ingrained in in our cultural and societal systems in a way that goes beyond what I know intellectually. Sure, people told me it was and continues to be an issue and I even know how to preach about it, but I don’t always SEE it. Click

Additional Sites Added for Youth Worker/Camp Counselor and lay Boundary Training Events

We are doing something new because lay and clergy leaders have both requested it. We are offering additional training for lay leaders, youth workers and camp staff. Our Boundary Training weekend will include training for youth workers and camp counselors on Saturday, April 4, and lay people on Sunday, April 5. Both events will include satellite sites in Sacramento and Fresno. Click the appropriate link below to sign up.

The Saturday training will assist anyone who works with youth to understand more about the importance of boundaries. Case studies and opportunities to talk specifically about situations we encounter in this sacred work will be the format for the training. If you work with youth in any capacity, this training will be very helpful. All camp staff and NYE leaders are required to have Boundary Training or they cannot serve on camp staff. The facilitator will be in-person at Community UCC (10 Irwin Way, Orinda) and will be available for specific questions during breaks and lunchtime. Satellite locations in Sacramento (Pioneer Congregational Church) and Fresno (First Congregational UCC, Big Red) will join the presenter online and then go off-line for facilitated small group conversations. The training is from 10 AM to 2 PM. Register
here.

The Sunday training is being offered at the request of ministers and lay leaders who want to better understand the boundary issues related to Authorized Ministers and who want to learn more about how to handle difficult situations in their own churches. It is not just ministers who have to be concerned about boundaries. Lay leaders not only want to be aware of their own boundary issues, they are often called upon to support the church when issues arise. Case studies and conversation around particular situations will be the format for the training. The facilitator will present from First Congregational UCC in Palo Alto (1985 Louis Road) from 2-5 PM. Satellite locations will be available at Pioneer Congregational Church in Sacramento and First Congregational Church in Fresno. Register
here.

Also, as a reminder, Boundary Training for Authorized Ministers will be held on Friday, April 3, 9 AM to 4 PM at Community Congregational UCC, 1305 W Second St., Benicia CA 94510. Register
here.

All three trainings will be led by The Rev. Al Miles, Lead Chaplain for Pacific Health Ministry serving at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, HI.

Erasing $4M of Medical Debt in the East Bay

Inspired by other UCC congregations in Chicago, St. Louis and around the nation, nine UCC churches in the East Bay, including our own, are working together to erase the medical debts of our neighbors in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

Medical debt destroys the financial stability of large segments of America’s most vulnerable communities: the sick, the elderly, the poor, and veterans and is a primary cause of homelessness. It also targets the middle class, driving many families who are barely getting along into poverty. By forgiving this debt we strive to give struggling individuals and their families a fresh start, and prevent new cases of homelessness amongst our neighbors. Our local campaign will be made possible by an extraordinary non-profit organization called RIP Medical Debt, founded in 2014 by two former debt collections executives. Over the course of decades in the debt-buying industry, they met with thousands of Americans saddled with unpaid and un-payable medical debt and realized they were uniquely qualified to help these people in need. They used their expertise and compassion to create a process to forgive medical debt: they would use donations to buy large bundles of medical debt, and then forgive that debt with no tax consequences to donors or recipients.

The results have been spectacular— over $1 billion in medical debts eradicated so far, providing financial relief for over 520,000 individuals and families. The best part is how cheaply we can buy the debt: for literally one penny on the dollar. Our goal is to raise, throughout Lent and culminating on Good Friday, $44,000 to retire $4.4 million in medical debt in the East Bay.  ( More detailed information coming soon)
Town hall with Congresswoman Barbara Lee

Every year, we celebrate Black History Month and honor the countless accomplishments of African Americans across the United States. The contributions that our great heroes and sheroes – giants like Dr. Martin Luther King, Maya Angelou, and Shirley Chisholm – made to the fight for civil rights and social justice cannot be overstated.

But as we celebrate our progress, we must also take time to reflect on the systemic challenges our communities still face, and how much further we have to go.

African Americans still experience disproportionate levels of poverty, incarceration and inequality in education and economic opportunities. For more information or to RSVP please click

Global Ministries 3rd Thursday Alert Posted

The Trump administration has released its proposal for the future of Palestine and Israel—a document that would be impossible to call a “peace plan.” UCC and Disciples leaders issued a statement in response to the release of the proposal that said, "We do not read the 181-page proposal as either realistic or just. … We do not see God’s justice in it."  Further, “The framework’s absence of any recognition of Palestinian claims and rights, and ignoring of international law, render this proposal illegitimate.” Click here to read more.
