Archaeology and Historic Preservation Presentation at Former Governors' Mansion State Historic Site


BISMARCK, N.D. – Join us on Thursday, March 19, at 7 p.m. for "Time Travels: Recording Cultural Sites Along Transportation Corridors" at the Former Governors’ Mansion State Historic Site in Bismarck. Damita Engel and Emily Sakariassen will discuss survey work on various types of road projects. The survey work highlighted will be investigations into the archaeology, historic sites, and architecture in areas where road projects are planned or underway.

The discussion will include interesting historical and architectural sites they have researched and recorded, artifacts such as pot sherds and sod houses that have been found during surveys, and the basic methods for such work including what it is being recording and why. Engel is an archaeologist and Sakariassen is an architectural historian with Metcalf Archaeological Consultants in Bismarck.
 
The Former Governors’ Mansion, located at the corner of Fourth Street and Avenue B in Bismarck, is a state historic site managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Admission is free. The site is open year-round. Winter hours, now in place through May 15, are the second combined Friday and Saturday of each month from 1 to 5 p.m. Groups are welcome to schedule visits outside of regular open hours by calling 701.328.9528 or email jcampbell@nd.gov.
