Join us this week for United Methodist Women Sunday!
Scripture for February 23

Now when Jesus heard that John had died, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard about the death, they followed him on foot from the towns.

When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick.

Pastoral Scripture: Matthew 14:13-21
This Sunday is UMW Sunday. The guest speaker will be Lisa Maupin. She is the Great Plains Conference Lay Leader and has been involved in the Conference and District levels of Great Plains United Methodist Women. She is a voting lay delegate to General and Jurisdictional Conferences and is a member of various conference committees.  She has also participated in the young women's leadership development programming provided through National United Methodist Women. Lisa is a member of South Gate United Methodist Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her day job is an Event and Outreach Manager with the Vice Chancellor's Office of Research and Economic Development at the University of Nebraska. Her first taste of United Methodist Women came from her grandmother and she has a passion for sharing the story of United Methodist Women and their impact not just locally but around the world in mission and justice work and developing strong spiritual female leaders.

ENTERING THE PASSION OF JESUS

PICTURING OURSELVES IN THE STORY
Join us for our Lenten Worship Series beginning Sunday, March 1, 2020
The events of Christ's Passion, which take place during the last week of Jesus' life, often don't receive enough time in our worship and study. These stories are important to our faith journey and our identity as followers of Jesus. And yet we often move too quickly from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday with little time to take in the dramatic story of that last week. Throughout the six weeks of Lent, we will "freeze-frame" moments in Holy Week so we might put ourselves in the picture, thereby "Entering the Passion of Jesus." How might taking a closer look at the ancient story open us to deeper conviction for our role in its ongoing message?
Inspired by Amy-Jill Levine's book by the same name.
ASH WEDNESDAY - Preparing the Canvas
"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit." - Psalm 51:10-12

So much of life happens around us, even to us, that we take little time to notice. The amount of stimulation and news and ideas and expectations coming at us can outweigh our ability to process all of it and so we stop looking too closely; we filter in order to survive. While this is necessary, it can also dull our senses for seeing the things that matter deeply. In this season of Lent, we will intentionally put a "frame" around the scenes of Jesus' last week and also frame our own lives in a way that we can see what really matters. In this Ash Wednesday service, we will ready ourselves for this journey by preparing the canvas of our lives, reapplying a base coat on which to create new works of art. Join us Wednesday, February 26 at 7:00 pm for our Ash Wednesday Worship.

Halftime will end at 6:45 that night to allow attendance at the Ash Wednesday worship.
A BOOK STUDY FOR LENT
We invite you to join us as we offer the Lenten Study, Entering the Passion of Jesus, A Beginner's Guide to Holy Week, Wednesday mornings at 10:00 am beginning March 4, in the Living Waters classroom upstairs. Throughout the season, we will "frame" our own current events and stories so that we might dedicate ourselves again to our work as disciples of Jesus.
This study will be available for Sunday School classes as well.
CPR/AED Refresher Course
There will be a CPR/AED refresher course offered on Wednesday, March 4, 2020, and March 18, 2020, at 5:30 in the church parlor.  Pick the time that works for you. These are open to anyone who is interested, but all safety team members, church staff, Sunday school teachers and ushers are encouraged to participate. Please note that this is just a refresher course, not a certification class. Questions?  Call Pat at 342-1855.
GRATITUDE CARDS FOR GIVING
The Connect Team is sponsoring Gratitude Cards for the month of February. These cards have been specially made so you can share your appreciation to those around us that may work or volunteer behind the scenes or might be overlooked. You can hand write a short note to them and either mail them, bring them to the office or deliver them yourself. These cards are meant to lift up and support those who may not normally be thanked for their hard work. Stop by the Welcome Desk on Sunday to pick up a card and make someone's day!!!
Dinners for 6
It's time for the next Dinners for 6 sign-up. Join us for this fun, fellowship, and food activity with a twist!! It consists of 36 people or 18 couples (2 individuals of any sort), on a rotation basis for meals with each other. Each month one couple would be the assigned host and would provide the meat or main course. (The host would also coordinate the date and place.) The other couples would be assigned to bring the side dishes and a dessert. This is a great way to get to know other people in the church that you might not normally share a meal with. Even in Jesus' day, breaking bread with friends was encouraged. If you would like to be a part of this, please email the office or call 620-342-6186. There is a sign-up sheet on the Welcome Desk. After we have all the names we will provide you with a schedule of who you will eat with each month. We currently have 10 couples signed up but we need 18 to make this work. Please sign up by March 1.

United Methodist Campus Ministry is sponsoring the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. Join them Tuesday, February 25 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm in Fellowship Hall. Proceeds will go to support ESU Seminary Scholarships.
The elementary children will be singing during the 10:35 am service on March 1st.
Card of Thanks
Dear Ron, Virginia, and all of the wonderful members of the FUMC "moving crew" -

Thank you all so much for your enormous help with moving so much furniture and many boxes from my mom's house recently for the Garage Sale. You all were so efficient, cheerful, and supportive, and you service is truly appreciated. Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,
Dana Witten
Children's Chatter

Rocky Railway, July 12-16, 6-8 pm

Life is rocky and full of ups and downs and twists and turns. At Rocky Railway, kids explore Jesus' power and how we can trust Jesus to pull us through. We will travel through stations of games, Bible adventures, science activities, and stop for singing and snacks. Online registration will open in March.

Camp Chippewa
Summer camp is a great way to meet new friends, grow in your faith, and enjoy the great outdoors. There are many different themed camps throughout the summer. Check out all the opportunities at campchippewa.org. FUMC will pay half tuition for our members.  After you register, email Cindy the name and date of the camp your child will be attending. (cindyk@fumchurch.org). The overall summer theme is "This Is Our Prayer." Early bird registration to save money is April 1.

Friends Together Preschool
The TU-TH class sure enjoys having Jodi Case visit each month!   She brings games, songs, and fun for us. This month we were able to do an art project to display in our classroom! We are very grateful for this opportunity provided to us through Mobilizing Literacy 4 Lyon County!

Our MWF class went to the Lyon County History Center for the Friday Family Fun Day.  We were also able to be artists and create our own canvas and learn songs of love and get the book If You're Groovy and You Know It, Hug a Friend!

To learn more about taking care of our teeth and Dental Health Month, the MWF class went on a field trip to Dr. Malone's office. It was a fun walk there and we were impressed with the moving chair and the tools the dentist uses to help people with their teeth.

Even though the weather has been unpredictable, we have had our Valentine Party in each class and all of us, me especially, are looking forward to Spring!

Thank you to the UMW and all of their helpers during the garage sale. We were able to acquire a few newer books for the children as well as being gifted a new mini fridge for the classroom to replace the one we had which was not working properly. What a LOT of items they sorted, priced, and packed out of here during that week! Thank you for your cooperation to keep this end of the building as safe as possible while the children were present.

UMW News

$19,000+

The total from our semi-annual Garage Sale for Missions is amazing! Thank you, everyone, for your prayers, your presence, your gifts (and purchases), and your service for this beneficial project!

Garage Sale week provided great fellowship opportunities for United Methodist Women, United Methodist Men, Crossroads Youth and many others who gave of their time to support this project.   United Methodist Men receive 25% of the proceeds and our youth group receives $1500 annually for their assistance with the sale.

Thank you.

UMW Sunday

Sunday, February 23 will be UMW Sunday.  Our guest speaker will be Lisa Maupin, a lay leader from Lincoln, Nebraska.  She has a passion for sharing the story of United Methodist Women and their impact on local and world missions as well as social justice.

Between services, you are invited to join her for a horseshoe talk in the North Parlor.  Her talk will relate to all organizations within the church to organize for future growth and to create an environment of hospitality.

During the services, the Thursday Morning Circle will be recognized and a Special Mission Recognition will be awarded.

Regina Falcetto and Robbie Hill have been Stephen Ministry Leaders at FUMC for six years. In that time, 46 of your friends, members of this congregation, have been supported during a difficult time in their lives by a Stephen Minister who provided one-to-one distinctly Christian care.
Several of those who have been care receivers in the recent past have given us permission to tell you about their relationships with their Stephen Ministers. We’ll share more comments from care receivers in the March Connection.
“When I was going through a difficult time, it felt like there really wasn’t much to look forward to in my days. But I could look forward to a weekly visit from my Stephen Minister, and for those I was and am still grateful. They were an uplifting, supportive, Christian friend when I really needed one.”
“Having a Stephen Minister kept me from turning my back on God. They helped me grieve when I lost my parent and became someone I now call a friend.  It was a blessing.”
“I totally support Stephen Ministry after being on the receiving end as a care receiver.  It was comforting to have an empathetic, listening ear when I needed someone who understood my deep pain and sadness. I also found the Journeying through Grief books sent the first year after my loss very helpful. Stephen Ministers are blessed and understanding members of our congregation who are trained to help others gain strength after a loss or life difficulty. Stephen Ministry strengthened my faith immeasurably, and I felt God’s hand with me through this relationship.”
There are opportunities for you to be involved in Stephen Ministry as a care receiver, a Stephen Minister, or as a Holiday Resort visitor.  We welcome the opportunity to visit with you about these.
