AWB: No Need for New Taxes as State Revenues Rise Again
Washington lawmakers have more than $1.1 billion in new revenues, thanks to a booming economy.
The 2020 legislative session has passed the halfway point, and House and Senate Democrats are expected to release their supplemental budget proposals on Monday.

This much is clear: The state of Washington continues to collect record tax revenue.

AWB News covered the revenue forecast earlier this week, which showed more than $1.1 billion in new revenue in the current and upcoming two-year budget cycles. This is a major boost for the state treasury, even in the context of the state's ongoing expansion. And it strengthens AWB's position on the budget: Lawmakers have ample revenue to work with, and raising taxes on employers should be last on the list.

So what will lawmakers do with this new revenue? Several priorities have emerged in recent days, from affordable housing, to big transportation investments, early childhood learning and tax relief.

We'll cover the budget proposals as soon as they're released. Stay tuned at www.awb.org for the latest news and information.

Transportation Leaders Manage Cuts
The state's top transportation leaders are managing significant cuts to the state transportation budget this year.

At the same time, they're considering a major transportation package for next year's session, and Washington's overall transportation infrastructure needs.

The chair and ranking member of the House Transportation Committee met with employers at AWB's final 2020 Lobby Lunch on Thursday.

Chairman and State Rep. Jake Fey, D-Tacoma, described careful cuts to projects, and the need to invest in fish culverts. The cuts were necessary due to the passage of Initiative 976.

Ranking Member and State Rep. Andrew Barkis, R-Olympia, discussed holding state transportation officials accountable for spending and project delivery, and efforts to take a comprehensive look at Washington's transportation needs.
