2020 Research-a-thon: Plastics
Friday, February 28 marks the third annual ELC Research-a-thon, an event where students gather together for a day of focused research on one topic. #ELCResearchathon
UPDATE ON DERELICT BOATS: The need to deal with derelict boats is another issue the ELC flagged over 10 years ago that was in the news recently. The owner of the boat in the article turned it over to the Dead Boat Society, and we happened to catch a clip of the boat as Salish Sea Industrial Services was towing it out of Gorge Harbour for disposal.
UPDATE ON MINING LAW REFORM: Last month, representatives from a variety of environmental, community, and Indigenous organizations from the BC Mining Law Reform Strategic Meeting met in Vancouver to plan next steps and identify key challenges and opportunities to continue the push to reform BC’s mining laws.
UPDATE ON PLASTICS POLLUTION: DFO is acting on the ghost fishing gear recommendations the ELC made in our Seven Reforms report. The Sustainable Fisheries Solutions & Retrieval Support Contribution Program provides funding for projects that take action to retrieve, dispose of and reduce fishing-related plastic waste.
UPDATE ON PUBLIC ACCESS: Thanks to the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC for the shout out to us in their newsletter and link to the Enhancing Public Access to Privately Owned Wild Lands report we prepared for them in 2016. The Council is intervening in the upcoming appeal on March 30-31, 2020 between Douglas Lake Cattle Company v. Nicola Valley Fish & Game Club in support of the public's common law right to access public lands and waters across private land. They are represented by ELC Associate and alumnus Morgan Blakley.
