Facing rejection

Kelowna city staff are recommending against a BC Cannabis Store location in Rutland due to “clustering.”

The proposed BCCS location on Highway 33 is facing rejection because it’s too close to another cannabis store already approved in the area.

However, the BC Liquor Distribution Branch is still seeking an amendment to allow them to open within 500 metres of the other store.

Kelowna city staff say the request by the province goes against its own provincial — and comparable — policy of keeping liquor stores a reasonable distance apart.

“The minimum distance of 500 metres is intended to avoid clustering of multiple stores, particularly in urban areas,” say staff in their report to council.

“This minimum proximity distance is similar to the provincial government requirement for a minimum of 1 km between new retail liquor stores.”

The proposed store in Willow Park Mall is 3,500 square feet and would employ 15 people.

The provincial government has a BCCS location open in Penticton and another coming soon in Vernon.

Valens hires dozens

There were dozens of chairs out, but every single one was full.

It was standing room only at a career fair at the Sheraton Hotel near YLW Thursday in Kelowna for The Valens Company.

We popped in to take a peek. There was a decent cross-section of people there all looking for an entry point into the cannabis industry.

Valens is hiring dozens of new staff as production labourers at its Lake Country facility.

Business seems to be brisk at the Kelowna-based extraction company.

We’ll get a peek at just how brisk next week, when Valens announces its fourth quarter and fiscal year 2019 financial results on Feb. 25.

Their extracts are used in all kinds of different products made by numerous brands.

Record sales on Valentine's Day

Love was in the air at Green Gaia for Valentine’s Day.

The South Okanagan stores in Summerland and Penticton experienced record sales.

“I had people coming in getting ready for date night,” says co-owner Katerina Bakalos.

“It was something for people to connect with each other in a way they don’t usually.”

Cannabis companies promoted the love holiday as a time to partake together and make a higher connection, using puns like ‘weed be great together.’

Gummies and oral sprays were a popular purchase for the occasion.

Bakalos says she recommended couples add cannabis oil to their cuisine, particularly pasta sauce, as a way to enjoy the experience.

The store also had a joint-rolling class on Valentine’s Day, which was well attended.

Dad jokes

I was named after my dad
Because I couldn’t possibly have been named before him

Seven has "even" in it.
That's odd.

Went to the store to get eight cans of sprite...
When I got home, I realized I’d only picked seven up.
