Hi <<First Name>>,

This week, we have a quick recap of our latest meetup, as well as a look to the future of post-Brexit data protection and worker's rights in the tech industry.

Have an excellent weekend,

Will (Tech for Good Global team)

What’s happened in the world of tech for good since our last newsletter:

Fuelling the Movement: next steps for the tech for good community ⛽

On Tuesday, we hosted our first Tech For Good London meetup of the year. With an excellent turnout, we took stock of how far the tech for good movement has come, and what steps can be taken to keep the movement growing strongly.

Here’s a quick look at the highlights of what we learned:

  • 48% of attendees work in startups, and 19% in charities. Perhaps the next frontier for the community will be to build bridges to government, academia and corporates.

  • For 69% of attendees, this was their first meetup.

  • The climate crisis, inequality, and mental health are the most popular subject areas to address.

This adds to countless more viewpoints, conversations and connections discussed throughout the evening.

We were kindly hosted by Pivotal UK, who have recently launched Pivotal Act - which partners with humanitarian organisations and charities to co-create tailored tech for good solutions to their challenges.

As this Mozilla guide notes, with great tech comes great responsibility, so we’ll keep up the mission of convening and supporting the tech for good community going forward.

If you would like the slides, please get in touch. To help fuel the movement, make sure to join our meetup group (and get everyone who might be interested to subscribe to this newsletter).

Unions and Co-ops: workers’ rights in the tech industry ✊

‘Old school’ collective action is gaining ground in Silicon Valley. This week, Tech Crunch featured a case for the cooperative model for tech startups. However, employee organisation in this industry is nothing new: here’s a brief history of labour activism in tech.

Without worker organisation, we can see the wholesale exploitation of low-paid workers and the proliferation of toxic and unsupportive environments higher up the chain, such as the horrible treatment of an Uber employee who suffered sexual harassment.

Tech workers are taking a stand. Uber and Lyft drivers are both forming unions and developing co-ops to maximise earnings. Additionally, Kickstarter employees just won a historic election to form their own union

Farewell, data protection: Brexit and GDPR 🇬🇧📂

The EU is a loud voice in regulating tech giants. Just this week, they politely sent Facebook’s proposals of self-regulation packing.

British citizens are currently protected under GDPR, however, this is set to change soon as a result of Brexit. Google is already planning to relocate data on British citizens from Europe to the USA. Despite decades of consumer activism, the USA hs some of the weakest data protection laws in the world, and no over-arching GDPR-style framework. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is trying to change that

For every problem, there is - for better or worse - a tech startup trying to fix it. Sure enough, here’s a selection of apps to help you get your data privacy in order.
