The Week That Was: Mail, Mail, Mail, Mackensi and EPJ

Monday, Feb. 17  - This episode may feature our all-time greatest concert story, thanks to an amazing tale from Niklas from Sweden. Stop reading and play now if you haven't already. If you have, play again

Tuesday, Feb. 18 - More tales of concerts that just didn't quite work out they way they were supposed to. And Bill Mulligan offers a nice twist on the concept, sorry Jimmy Buffet fans.

Wednesday, Feb. 19 - We answered listener correspondence on some episodes we did about Ken Burns’ “Country Music,” albums from 1984, Tool and the discovery of Durand Jones & the Indications.

Thursday, Feb. 20 -  Mackensi Crenshaw dropped some knowledge on all of us about the beautiful music of 1970. That's her right up there!

Friday, Feb. 21 - EPJ takes a look at the best music of 2019 and name-checks a host of SuburbsPod listeners. And sound effects!!!

On Deck:  Tug Baker Redux

Plus, you get to meet Intern Mary!

Monday, Feb. 24  - Rob Gates and Kevin Goff join us to crack open some Genesis fan mail, while Patrick makes unhelpful comments.

Tuesday, Feb. 25 - Tug Baker is back! He's been gone too long and on Tuesday he fills us in on his annual January music deep dive. First up: Joni Mitchell.

Wednesday, Feb. 26 - More Tug part two. His other January music focus couldn't be more different that Tuesday's: KRS-One.

Thursday, Feb. 27 -  Tug hangs around and Kevin and Rob are back as well. Today's topic is a cool one: Music from James Bond movies. What's your fave?

Friday, Feb. 28 - A great way to wind up the week. We have intern Mary on the show. She came all the way out the suburbs just to chat with us. Hope you like her as much as we do.

Only 11 days left! Get your tickets folks!

! LIVE SHOW ALERT !

ATTENTION: If you are somewhere, anywhere, near Vienna, Va. on Wed, March 4, 2020, head immediately to Jammin Java. We are putting on a live show counting down the best songs by The Who. Who's Best, if you will.

In addition to witty banter, sharp insights, and plenty of ear-splitting song clips, there will be special guests (actually from England in one case), giveaways and a very special Patrick Powerpoint Presentation on his personal collection of Who vinyl. Fun times for all!

LISTENER OF THE WEEK:

Existence Precedes Essence!

I live in … Suffern NY …"a town & a lifestyle.”

I work as … a children’s music specialist

I discovered “Rockin’ the Suburbs” … by doing a podcast search for The Clash, found Rockin’ the Suburbs and was instantly hooked.

The most-prized record in my collection is … Candy Butchers ( aka The Blue Thumb Album)

The first record I ever bought was … One More From the Road by Lynyrd Skynyrd

The first concert I saw was … Warren Zevon, solo acoustic on piano and guitar!

The last concert I saw was … Tyler Childers, in Brooklyn

The best concert I’ve seen was … Recently: Vulfpeck at Madison Square Garden. Of all time: Springsteen at The Meadowlands.

I have met rock stars. … I’ve shaken hands over the years with: Neil Young, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe and David Byrne. You should ask me about comedians though! I worked at a NYC Comedy Club for a few years in the late ’80s.

I am drinking … Beer: Sixpoint, The Crisp. Bourbon: Blanton’s (it was a gift, I wouldn’t spend that much on myself).

My favorite basketball team is … the Terps baby! My son’s alma mater.

My philosophy of life is … Existence Precedes Essence!

 PLAYLIST OF THE WEEK >>>

Because he's awesome, Harris King does many awesome things. One of those things is making a playlist of music from 1970 after listening to our chat with another person of awesomeness, Mackensi Crenshaw. Now there is a double-awesome playlist for all of us to enjoy. The power of the Suburbs Pod community right there. Hit play while you're reading the rest of this newsletter!

Last but Never Ever Least... Friday New Releases!

Our award-winning new release roundup is alwaus new and, uh, fresh. So get your fresh ass down to the Penguin Feather and grab these fresh slabs o' wax.

Best Coast - Always Tomorrow (Concord)Singer Bethany Cosentino recently opened up about her struggles with drugs and alcohol. We are happy to hear she is doing well with sobriety, and happy too to hear the bright pop-rock we have come to expect from this California duo.

Greg Dulli - Random Desire (Royal Cream/BMG)The Afghan Whigs frontman mades his solo debut and cements his position as the second-coolest Cincinnati musician (Bootsy Collins No. 1; even Greg would admit that).

Guided By Voices - Surrender Your Poppy Field (GBV)Next to that stack of New Yorker magazines that keeps piling up, add the latest from Robert Pollard and crew.

Matt Holubowski -  (Les Disques Audiogramme)

Back on episodes 437 and 438, we interviewed this French Canadian singer-songwriter. He even played some live music for the pod. So listen to that. Then hear Matt’s latest quietly intense song cycle.

King Krule - Man Alive! (True Panther Sounds/Matador)

London’s Archy Marshall mixes post-punk with electronica with industrial with art rock with noise rock into a sound that would be like if you took a Beck 45 and played it at 33 1/3.

Ozzy Osbourne - Ordinary Man (Epic)

On his 12th solo album, Ozzy works with Travis Scott, Post Malone and Elton John. And at 71 years old, his earnest yowl still sounds fresh. This is no ordinary man.

Lee Ranaldo & Raul Refree - Names of North End Women (Mute)

Former Sonic Youth guitarist Renaldo teams up with flamenco guitarist Refree for some soft art rock. Musical experimentations need not always be explorations in feedback.

"Rock-and-roll, on the other hand, presumes that the four of us--as damaged and anti-social as we are--might possibly get it to-fucking-gether, man, and play this simple song. And play it right, okay? Just this once, in tune and on the beat." -  Dave Hickey, Air Guitar: Essays on Art and Democracy
