Spring is just around the corner and what does that mean? More daylight! Well yes, it does mean that the days are longer, people can enjoy more outdoor activities, and abundant flowers. There are various type of flowers such as lilies, roses, daisies, tulips, well you get the picture. Such a variation of flowers means that there is something for everyone to enjoy, whether you like bright colors or just something simple. Their beautiful and sometimes radiating scents, along with their glorious colors, just makes it feel like Spring.
What does spring mean to you? Spring is defined as “the early part or first stage of something”. This can mean the growing of new plants, the start of a great new adventure or anything else that brings happiness into your life. Along with this definition, spring symbolizes rebirth, love, joy, hope, youth, and growth. Spring is when people decide to start making changes in their lives. The change in season leads to cleaning. Whether it be a cleansing diet or a closet clean-out, it leads to happier feelings just for doing that new project.
What kind of new projects do you have going on in your MG association? Or maybe you're putting a new spin on a project from last year. Is it a celebration of Earth Day, a new information booth venue, a new trail enhancement at a garden or park? We would love to hear about your stories next month!

The Veterans Memorial Arbor is a place where people come and reflect on the sacrifices made by our veterans, and to honor those who have served or are currently in the military. The arbor, planted with American Wisteria, stretches across the 120-foot dam at one end of the lake at Aldridge Gardens in Hoover. The Pentagon Plaza, a place where engraved pavers honor or memorialize those who have served, accents the entrance to the arbor. The Plaza is also marked by busts of local service members who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the War on Terror. Another plaza punctuates the center of the arbor, displaying all five service branch flags and the American flags.
In four workdays this winter, a group of Shelby County Master Gardeners, led by Aldridge Gardens Advisory Board Member, Deb Elliott, completed landscaping around the Veterans Memorial Arbor and the Pentagon plaza. The project adds beauty and quiet dignity to the arbor and will be enjoyed by visitors to the Gardens for many years to come.
This massive project involved transplanting and pruning three dozen roses, then planting 137 new plants along the sides of the arbor. The plants include 'Grey Owl' Juniper, 'Needlepoint' Holly, 'Vintage Jade' Distylium, and 'Fire and Ice' Hydrangeas. Thank you Shelby MGs for your hard work and dedication!
