CMIV: Tastemakers: Collectors, Curators, and Critics
Critical Mass is back and FREE for a fourth year running! This year the event will take place on March 14th from 1-3 pm at the 21c Museum/Hotel in Lexington, Kentucky and we are so excited to welcome The Great Meadows Foundation's Critic-in-Residence Kóan Jeff Baysa to moderate. Kóan is planning a new format that includes a pop-up exhibition of works by Kentucky artists and some very special guests to join our conversation. A reception for all those in attendance will follow. Watch for final details this week and don't forget to reserve your seat now by emailing reservations@under-main.com - space is limited.

Body Language: Hunter Stamps and Mike Goodlett
Keith Banner reviews the current intriguing exhibition at the UK Art Museum of works by two Kentucky sculptors. He writes:

"Goodlett and Stamps have created a Vaudevillian planet together, an Aztec temple on acid, a nightmare toy shop, a landscape populated by creatures and things unnamable, and yet the body language emanating from each piece, ossified through concrete and clay, creates an ongoing and impenetrable narrative."

A Little Room to Breathe
Peter Morrin, former Director of the Speed Art Museum and a regular UnderMain contributing writer, gives us a fascinating insider's look at curatorial decisions about installation of exhibitions. He takes us on a tour of a number of major museums in the region and elsewhere to help us understand the essential curatorial questions:

"The curatorial problem remains: how do you make the work of art mean more? How do you make the work of art more present and more accessible?  How do you sustain attention?  Each exhibition and each exhibition space demand different solutions."

Hemp and the Future of Fashion
Tom Martin interviews designer Soreyda Benedit Begley for WEKU's Eastern Standard about her upcoming runway show, The Future of Fashion 2020. This year Begley is focusing on designs incorporating hemp fabrics. The show takes place on March 13th and 14th.

ETC.,

At UnderMain we pride ourselves on the excellence and accessibility of our writing. This is a credit to the great corps of contributing writers and several are highlighted in this newsletter. We are looking to add to our corps with writers who are able to do occasional pieces for UnderMain. We pay for all content. We are looking for writers with the background and experience to do reviews and previews of:
  • Visual art exhibitions in Lexington Metro, Louisville Metro, Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati and around the region;
  • Classical, avant garde, experimental, and jazz music performances within the same region as above; and
  • Literary works by Kentucky authors or works that pertain to Kentucky including fiction, nonfiction, graphic works, and poetry.
Interested writers should send a resume and copies of three original relevant pieces to UM@under-main.com.

WEKU's Eastern Standard with Tom Martin will feature an interview with Dmitry Strakovsky of Infinite Industries on its March 5th show. UnderMain Co-Publisher Christine Huskisson will be interviewed by Tom about the upcoming Critical Mass IV on the March 12th show.
