Gary Reed Indoor Meet
The meet was quite a success with almost 200 athletes registered. We have been inviting the BC Universities who have Track and Field teams to join us for this meet after first being approached by a group of Middle Distance runners on Vancouver Island. For the most part, this group has decided to stop coming, but we are getting attendance for this meet from UVic, Trinity Western, UBC Okanagan, and TRU. These athletes, along with many of our own club members and members from Okanagan Athletics, help to make this first indoor meet of the year a successful one. As word gets around, we are getting attendance from other athletes in the province who may be looking for times, or distances, or heights. They are aware that Kamloops puts on first-class track and field meets.
It took quite a while for the results from the meet to become available as I had to wait for some athletes to get their BC Athletics / Athletics Canada memberships in place. However, all is now in place and the results are posted on our website on the Club Meets page. Click on the Gary Reed Info link and you will have quite a selection to choose from. I put in the results for the whole meet in both PDF and HTML formats. I also broke out the Kamloops Track and Field Club results - all the results, JD results, 13 and older results, masters results.
Thank you again to all of our officials who did an excellent job of officiating and making the athletes and their parents feel welcome, along with their usual outstanding job of running the various events.
Also thank you to all the volunteers that Nicole Ritter (our Volunteer Coordinator) was able to acquire and assign to various tasks. I understand that it was a bit of a rocky start for some because they were told they weren't needed at the event they had been assigned to. Hopefully, that won't happen again and we are able to streamline this process. It is not an easy task for Nicole, but the volunteers were great. My special thanks to those who helped us to clean up and move our equipment to storage from the finish line. You really made it work at that time of the day on Saturday and your assistance was most appreciated.
I also noticed how great the hurdles crew was, and the crew who moved the mats to the end of the track and then back to the beginning of the track (for the safety of our older athletes who need something to safely stop their forward momentum at the end of their races). In fact, I managed to catch a photo of one of the mats being moved in which one of our coaches and our volunteer coordinator were helping to move, along with quite a number of volunteers.

Registration for our Next Meet
Coming up next weekend is our final indoor meet of the season. This one (2020 Van Ryswyk Indoor Meet / BC Masters Indoor Championship) is two meets combined into one. It takes place Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday, Feb. 28, 29, and Mar. 1. Registration has been ongoing for a while now and we have now passed the early deadline for registrations. The late deadline closes Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm. Up until then, if there are members of our club who would like to compete, but don't want to pay the late fee, please email Brian Beck at KTFCregistrar@gmail.com. After Tuesday evening, we can only take additional entries at the meet, only if there is room in the event and then the late fee will apply to everyone.
A note to JD athletes up to those in Grade 12 and parents. Taking out a BC Athletics Training Membership when registering for the club means that you won't be able to use your BC Athletics membership number to register for track and field meets. You will have to pay the additional "Day of Event" insurance fee for the required BC Athletics insurance. You will be charged that amount when you register online.
For those athletes who are out of grade 12, you must have a Competitive membership with BC Athletics in order to compete at any sanctioned meets. This seems to be something that not everyone understands. I know it is cheaper to take out a Training membership, but you will be limited in competing, especially for those who are out of high school.
In any case, any athletes wishing to compete in their Provincial Championship meets must have a Competitive membership in order to register and compete. If you only have a Training membership and wish to participate in your Provincial Championship, you will have to let me know ahead of trying to register and we can work out how you can pay to have your membership upgraded.
On a related note, when registering for track meets, it is quite important to enter seed times and distances. It is mainly important for track events because better seed times are assigned preferred lanes over those who don't have seed times.
For the Van Ryswyk and BC Masters Indoor Championship, I have gone through results from the Gary Reed events from that meet and put in any seed times and distances for the same events if you registered in the same event for this next meet. It is good practice to begin keeping track of your best time of the season from previous meets so that you can use them for upcoming meets. Indoor meets are used for indoor meets, and outdoor meets are usually required for outdoor meets.
MANURE SALE MEETING
Tuesday, Feb 25/2020 at TCC upstairs in one of the meeting rooms (Signage will be provided) at 6:00 pm. Attendance is mandatory and if you cannot attend we would appreciate you sending us an email to judy54armstrong@gmail.com or sending someone in your place to pick up your flyers for distribution. Our membership is expected to deliver flyers and help with the manure sale.
We have various groups that are interested in coming out to bag so we are very lucky to have them on board. We will be discussing the sale to take place on April 4/2020 weekend and we are hopeful it will only be one day this year as we are only selling 2000 bags. The money raised goes to pay our rent at TCC and Hillside Stadium each year.
CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Immediately after the Manure Sale meeting, we are holding our club AGM at 7:00. If you are interested in sitting on our board or you know someone that is please let us know. We would be happy to describe all our positions and we need people with a keen interest in our club in many capacities.
SCHOOL TRACK MEETS
After much back and forth with the City of Kamloops while the BC Lions are here we are happy to let you know that we are hosting our elementary and high school meets as follows:
- Zone 1 May 8/2020
- North and West Zones (high school meet May 11, 2020)
- Zone 2 May 12, 2020
- Zone 3 May 13, 2020
- Zone 4 May 14, 2020
- Okanagan Championships (high school meet) May 19, 2020
- District Elementary Championships May 22/2020

VAN RYSWYK INDOOR/BC MASTERS INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP
As club members, please remember to volunteer at this meet. Many hands make light work. Even 4 hours makes a big difference. Please contact Nicole Ritter to let her know which times work for you.
The club is looking for a few people within our organization:
- To step up as an equipment manager. This position requires you to be at the track meets directing volunteers as to what needs to be done.
- We also would like someone who is handy in terms of being able to repair equipment or if not, then direction on how to do that through a company would be appropriate.

Donations
We are taking donations of bottles and other returnables at the General Grant's Bottle Depot at 963 Camosun Crescent (just off McGill) on an ongoing basis. So if you want to donate to the club just take your bottles in and let them know the donation is being made to the Kamloops Track and Field Club, they will sort them. It all adds up! Thank you.
Track Rascals
Big thanks to Dayl Dhaliwal, and Gary and Caitlin Reed on the track rascals’ programs this winter. The program is terrific and we are getting tons of compliments on how much fun the track rascals are having. They are enjoying the program and look forward to the outdoor session coming soon. Please check our website for further information on the dates for the next one.
Elementary Relay Fest - April 1
If you are interested in helping out at the Elementary Schools' Relay Fest on April 1, 2020, by sitting in a track and field booth and handing out flyers please contact Judy at 250-319-6321. Our outdoor program starts on April 6 and we need someone interested in promoting our program. The commitment is from 2:30-5:30 on that day. OTHER NEWS
Congratulations to thrower Ryan Jacklin of Kamloops Track and Field Club who won the Shot Put at the Boise Indoor Nike track meet in Boise Idaho this past month. Ryan competed alongside 800 high school athletes. Coming second in the weight throw was Matt Arnold from Revelstoke, also a member of KTFC.
Congratulations to both of these young men and to Coach Dylan Armstrong.
