St. Sophia Weekly Update

Weekly Services

The three Sundays of the Triodion (beginning on February 9) help to set us on the course toward the journey of Great Lent. The Parable of the Publican and the Pharisee, and the Parable of the Prodigal Son, begin our preparation for Great Lent by focusing our thoughts on repentance. We are reminded of our flawed humanity, and of God's patience and limitless compassion. This Sunday, February 23, we observe Judgement Sunday, and read from the Gospel of Matthew 25:31-46 - which describes what will happen when Christ returns, being reminded that "God is not only the Friend of man, but also the most righteous Judge, Who recompenses to each according to his deeds."

We pray to see each of you during services this weekend beginning with Evening Vespers today at 6PM and for Sunday services beginning with Orthros at 9AM followed by Divine Liturgy at 10AM. We will be also be celebrating the memory of Bruce Nelson tomorrow with a one year Memorial Service. May his memory be eternal.

'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.'

Matthew 25:37-40

Please remember to visit the church calendar to see all the Lenten services which are taking place, beginning with the first Saturday of Souls service next Saturday, beginning with Orthros at 9AM and Divine Liturgy at 10AM.

This past week, Fr. Thomas had the pleasure of addressing the religious studies class from the Geneva School of Boerne, who were on hand to learn about the Orthodox faith. Geneva School of Boerne is a classical and Christian K-12 private school that pursues doing all things with excellence to the glory of God. Here are a few images from that event.

Prayer for Healing
O Lord our God, Who by word alone did heal all diseases, Who did cure the kinswoman of Peter, You Who chastise with pity and heal according to Your goodness; Who are able to put aside every malady and infirmity, do You Yourself, the same Lord, grant aid to this Your servants and cure them of every sickness of which they are grieved; lift them up from their bed of pain, and send down upon them Your great mercy, and if it be Your Will, give to them health and a complete recovery; for You are the Physician of our souls and bodies, and to You do we send up Glory: to Father, and to Son, and to Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Message from Archbishop Elpidophoros

Our Orthodox Faith is more simple than we think. “Beloved, if any one says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.” What could be more simple?

Wisdom of the Fathers

He indicates the dispositions of each, calling the one kids, the other sheep, that He might indicate the unfruitfulness of the one, for no fruit will come from kids; and the great profit from the other, for indeed from sheep great is the profit, as well from the milk, as from the wool, and from the young, of all which things the kid is destitute.
St. John Chrysostom
Homily on Matt. XXV, 4th Century

For when one has pity on the poor, he lends to God; and he who gives to the least gives to God--sacrifices spiritually to God an odour of a sweet smell.
St. Cyprian of Carthage
The Lord's Prayer, 33. B#41, p.102, 3rd century
