                                                                        March 2020
The SDBC Winter Classic Pickleball Tournament on Saturday, February 22nd was a great time to see some outstanding pickleball. No matter what division players were in, the level of skill was elevated for the tournament. After the tournament, spectators and players alike tried their hand at serving, lobbing, and dinking challenges. There were more than a few who may have spoiled their appetite for lunch by eating the candies and chocolates handed out for individual skills in the challenges. Over fifty people stayed for a wonderful lunch prepared by Brenda, Barb, Bonnie, Janice, and Patti. Topping off the lunch was my favourite: Rolo Pie. After lunch, Terry Weatherly, our guest speaker and tournament participant, spoke to us briefly about Alpha, a program being offered at SDBC starting in April, that introduces what Christians believe and why. More information is provided below.

Thank you to all of you who volunteered to make this a really enjoyable tournament. Volunteers helped with the setup of the gym and chapel on Friday evening while others helped with scorekeeping and timekeeping on Saturday. The skill challenge volunteers allowed many of you to test your skills and enjoy the treats. Lunch was delicious thanks to our kitchen crew and thanks also to our speaker, Terry Weatherly, who made the connections between an exciting program, Alpha, and pickleball. We have photos from the tournament thanks to Sandy who spent the entire time trying to capture the right shot. You can view some of the photos by clicking here and scroll down to the bottom of the web page.

Finally, thanks to all of you who stayed behind to help clean up and set up chairs for a Sunday event at the church.

It goes without saying how grateful we were for Julie Hawkes and Lorie Scott who stepped up to help when we had a medical emergency prior to the start of the tournament. Their professionalism and skill were much appreciated as they assisted until the First Responders arrived.

Pickleball Levels-Personal Skills Assessment

One question we get asked by those playing pickleball here at the church is when should you make the move to a more advanced session level as your skills develop. The decision has generally been self-regulated with no hard and fast criteria, however, if you think that you are ready to move up to a higher level we have some suggestions:

First, evaluate your skill level using the Delta Pickleball Skill Level chart or the USAPA self-assessment charts (we have laminated copies in the sign-in book in the church gym) to see where you stand.

Second, talk to your present session host and see if they can give you some advice as to how you are doing. If you wish to go to another level, it would be courteous to ask the host in that next session if you could play for one or two games to gauge your suitability for that session.

We want everyone to feel comfortable in the session they play in and to play at a level that is suitable for those playing in that session as well.

Thank you, and enjoy your pickleball and the fellowship!

February Attendance Averages
The purpose of publishing the attendance averages is to help you see what sessions may work for you and give you the opportunity to get in as many games as you can. Some sessions continue to be very popular.

Weekly Pickleball Schedule

Thank you to those coming to the first session for not to entering the gym before 4:20PM as Southpointe may have use of the gym for extra curricular sports. For all other sessions, please continue to sign in no more that 30 minutes before your session and then wait in the church foyer until 5 minutes before your session time.

Our Monthly Charity Donation

In February, we were able to donate $1,000 to a local charity called WINGS (Monarch Place). WINGS is an organization providing women and their children who are victims of domestic violence both emergency and long term support. If you would like more information on this charity, click here.

In March, we will be setting aside monies collected for the Starfish Pack program which provides food for elementary students and families in need with food for the weekends. The program has recently been expanded so that it now includes two schools in Tsawwassen and two in Ladner.

Eye Safety

Recently, we were reminded of how easy it is to get injured playing pickleball. One of our players was involved in a freak accident that appeared innocent-looking but ended up being quite serious, resulting in a trip to emergency. Eye protection is something to consider. Click here for further information from Pickleball Ontario.
Damaged Ball Request
Many of you may not be aware that we donate all the cracked unusable pickleballs we have to a local women’s softball team.  But, they are only useful to them if they are not crushed. From now on, there will be a bag labelled "damaged balls" placed in the ball box. If a ball is cracked, just place it in the bag and then pick out another ball to use. No need to step on them. Thanks for your help.

General Rules of Play at SDBC

  • Please sign in for your session but do not arrive to sign in more than 30 minutes before the session you wish to play in begins. Also, please do not sign up for others who are not there with you when you arrive.
  • In consideration of others playing at the current session, please do not enter the gym any earlier than 5 minutes prior to the start of your session. Please remain outside or in the church foyer.
  • In fairness to others, please only attend a maximum of one playing session per day (exception: you can attend one Skills Session & then one playing session on a Saturday)
  • Remember to pay the $2 per player fee at the beginning of your session.
  • Wear gym shoes to prevent injury from slipping.
  • Bring your own water bottle.
  • Please refrain from coaching fellow players unless they have asked for coaching.
  • When there are 4 or more players waiting, all games end when one of the teams reaches 9 points. No 2 point difference.
  • After your game, place your paddle in the rack oriented for winner or non-winner. The next four players to go out will be according to the same orientation of the closest paddle to the beginning of the rack. Alternate between winners and non-winners for next court availability.
  • At the end of the final session of the day, please help clean up and put away all the equipment and chairs. The gym must be vacated within 10 minutes of the end of the session, in order for the church to be secured.
  • Level of Play: Play at the session that is appropriate for your skill level. If you need any assistance determining your skill level, please ask one of the hosts.
  • Rating Descriptors: Skill level ratings can be broken down into a range between 1.0-5.0. An advanced player is highly skilled and has mastered third shots, dinks, and lobs, and understands body and court position. Find your rating here.
Upcoming Events at South Delta Baptist Church

At our Winter Classic luncheon held on Saturday, February 22nd, Terry Weatherly, one of our tournament participants, introduced us to a program for the community to be held at South Delta Baptist called, Alpha.

Alpha is a series of interactive sessions exploring the basics of the Christian faith. Each session looks at a different question and is designed to create conversation. There's no pressure, no follow-up, and it's free to attend. It's an open, informal, and honest space to explore and discuss life's big questions together. Click here to find out more about Alpha and how to sign up.

We are hoping to have a couple of tables set aside for pickleballers that may be interested in attending. If you do wish to join with fellow pickleballers, indicated so under requests when you sign up.

ALPHA
SDBC will be hosting the Alpha Course starting Sunday, April 19th. This 8-week course will cover some of the bigger questions of life, including, "Is There More To Life Than This?" // "Who Is Jesus?" // "How Can I Have Faith?" // "How Does God Guide Us?" Registration for this course is now open through our website. Click the picture above for more details, or email Mary Grierson, SDBC's Community Life Coordinator, for more information.

Community Dinner

SDBC hosts a Community Dinner for those who are in need of a nice meal or friendship. This is one of the ways we share the love of Jesus Christ with our community. Community Dinner takes place on the first Tuesday of each month. This month, it takes place on Tuesday, March 3rd, from 6:30-8PM.

Senior Scene Luncheons

Our Senior Scene Luncheons are for senior couples, singles, widows, and widowers from within our church, seniors residences, and the community. Senior Scene happens at 11:30AM every third Tuesday of each month, September to May. We provide a home-style lunch, uplifting music, warm fellowship, and learning principles of life from the bible through various speakers and musicians. Come and join us and connect with other seniors in our community. This month, it takes place on Tuesday, March 17th from 11:30AM-1:30PM.
