IABC APAC Chair's message

Hello Y’all

I’ve just spent a jam-packed three-days in Austin Texas at IABC’s Leadership Institute (IABCLI) and am writing this on a high (literally). IABCLI is an investment that IABC makes in its volunteer leaders providing leadership development, knowledge sharing and creating connection. There we also recognise excellence in chapter management and outstanding contributions by individuals at the local chapter and regional level. It’s not about patting ourselves on the back but rather to give credit to those volunteer leaders within who give so much to make us all better as communication professionals, and as a profession.

I’m incredibly proud of our leaders in the Asia Pacific who were deservedly recognised last week. Our chapters in Canberra, Queensland and Victoria received multiple Chapter Management Awards in diverse categories. It was an extraordinary night for IABC APAC with two special awards. Sia Papageorgiou, SCMP (IABC Victoria’s outgoing Chapter President) was recognised for her leadership excellence with the Chapter Leader of the Year Award. I also received the gong for Regional Leader of the Year. I’m humbled to be recognised but admittedly it is not a solo effort by any means, and I thank my board and in particular my Vice-Chair, Kristy Christie. To say there were smiles all around (and a few margaritas) is definitely an understatement!

Recognition. It’s a wonderful thing that can have incredible impact on an individual, a team and of course an organisation. We’ll be continuing to work on this within the profession in the coming months. At the moment IABC is evaluating the hundreds of Gold Quill (GQ) Award entries. As in other regions, APAC has Blue Ribbon Panels (two in Australia, and one each in the Philippines and India) evaluating the GQ entries in person this weekend, as well as evaluators pairing virtually across the globe. It’s one of my favorite activities each year, and I can’t tell you how exciting it is when we strike gold. Good luck to all of you who’ve entered – you’ll find out the outcome in April.

At our Fusion20 conference, 25-27 March in Wellington NZ, we’ll be recognising our Silver Quill Award winners at the Gala as well as the inaugural Communicator of the Year (CoTY) winner/s. We award the Silver Quill to those who’ve scored above 5.12 in the Gold Quill Awards process, and this year we’ll recognise those winners from 2019 due to timing.

If you’ve not yet registered for Fusion20 then get on to it as it will definitely deliver plenty of learning, inspiration and connections. Our program is now up on the website, so please check it out. We’re also hosting the Global Communication Certification Council’s CMP and SCMP certification exams on the morning of Wednesday 25 March.

We’ve also got lots more planned in terms of professional development coming with free webinars from our APAC and partner community, special offers with the Corporate Affairs Summit and a roadshow with the IABC International Executive Board Vice-Chair, Bonnie Caver, in selected cities in Australia and New Zealand.

And, March is Member Month so look it's the perfect time to renew, rejoin or join IABC, and if you're already a member then tell a friend or colleague.

Cheers,
Zora

Webinar: The role of Internal Communicator in times of crisis with Sushant Vashisht
An IABC APAC professional development webinar, 19 March 2020

Description
Join Sushant Vashisht - Head of Executive & Employee Communications, Adobe - India, Japan & APAC as he discusses the role of the internal communicator in times of crisis. Sushant has extensive experience in corporate and internal communications in the technology, pharmaceutical, and finance sectors

Businesses these days are vulnerable to several challenges like a viral pandemic, natural calamities, technology outages, and terrorism. In a multi-geo setting, organizations can be surprised by the quick turn of events and issues converting into crisis. In a rush to deal with the crisis and the impact on external audiences, internal communications can sometimes be forgotten. However, with the right approach, effective internal communication can be one of the most effective ways of ensuring that your crisis does not get any worse.

A role of an internal communication professional is very critical in managing the workforce sentiment and keeping the right level of engagement between the executives and employees. Sushant will discuss some of the best practices around managing crisis communications with employees and internal stakeholders.

IABC Member-at-Large Profile: Rauf Hameed

IABC Member-at-Large profile: Rauf Hameed

While most IABC members in our Asia Pacific region belong to a local chapter, we also have a strong community of Members-at-Large. One such member is Rauf Hameed, communication consultant based in Lahore, Pakistan, who is also a board member and director of communications with IABC Asia Pacific.

Rauf is a passionate communication and advocacy professional with over 25 years of experience. He is a trusted adviser with extensive experience in stakeholder engagement and managing issues of industry and public interest to achieve strategic business goals.  Rauf has represented the voice of organisations such as WWF, Tetra Pak, Coca-Cola Icecek and CCL Pharmaceuticals in his country and abroad.

We asked Rauf about being an IABC APAC Member-at-Large:

  • How long have you been an IABC member, and why IABC?
  • What’s the biggest challenge in your role?
  • What’s it like being a Member-at-Large?
  • How important is it that IABC APAC connects you to other Members-at-Large?
