What are the odds?
We're all gamblers of one sort or another, aren't we? It starts before we're born. Did you know that the odds of you being born as you are basically zero. (You can read about it here: The odds of you being alive are incredibly small.) And yet, here we are. 😋

Lots of us were taught to "Be Prepared." That's the motto of many youth organizations. I remember learning it at my mother's knee, in fact.

Kim Otto lives by the motto "Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst." It's a smart way to hunt a man who doesn't want to be found and stay alive while she's doing it.

You probably live by a similar credo. You save money for a rainy day. You stock up on groceries. You have a supply of batteries in case the power goes out. You rarely (if ever) run your vehicle out of gas. And so on.

Which means, in one way or another, we're all Preppers, aren't we? But what are the odds that we'll ever be placed in such a position? And what would we do if all of our preparations were useless?

When I read Die Trying, Lee Child's novel that I used for the source book for Prepper Jack, I was struck by the idea of preparedness getting way far down the road from what most of us do for daily living. Learning how to kill in self-defense, stock piling everything from weapons to fuel to seeds for growing one's own food, and more.

Which made me wonder: What kind of people do that? And, for a crime writer like me, what are the dangers of living that lifestyle?

For one thing, living off the grid means other people don't know where you are. Which means it could take a fatally long time for help to reach you, if you needed it.

So what if you were living in a remote location and someone terrible invaded your family? What would peaceful preppers do?

That's the kernel of the idea that grew into Prepper Jack. The early reviews are coming in and they are stellar! Whew! (I always worry what you'll think...)
