Message from the Board

Dear Timberwolves,

We hope everyone has had a nice mid-winter break and are enjoying the few extra days to relax.

Thank you to everyone who came to our membership meeting last week. Welcome to our two new PTSA Co-VPs - Muusa Liinpaa, Co-VP Volunteers and Amrit Bhuie, Co-VP of Ways and Means. The membership also elected the nominating committee who will present a new slate for the PTSA board for 2020-21. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

This week, we are holding another meeting for our Traffic Safety Team. We would love to have you be a part of our team. There is no long term sign up. We appreciate any time you are willing to volunteer to help keep the traffic running smoothly. Hope to see you there.

Happy Presidents' Day!
-Your TMS PTSA Board

News and Announcements

E-Prep Update

Let’s start with a big thanks for your donations to our Emergency Preparedness Fund. We reached our 2019-2020 budget goal. Thanks you!

A new school means we are building up the emergency supplies from scratch. It’s exciting but also challenging - where should we start?

First, thanks to a recent new policy from the district, LWSD provided the required minimum supplies for the school: emergency food and water for a couple of days for students and staff, full first aid kit, classroom emergency buckets, thermal blankets, glow sticks… The PTSA with the help of two volunteers performed the first inventory of the emergency room. And students and teachers went through the classroom emergency bucket in November for the district wide emergency prep drill.

Second, we actively participated in the LWSD PTSA Emergency Preparedness committee meetings (http://www.lwptsa.net/emergency-prep/) and reached out to other middle schools to visit their supply room / container (Evergreen MS, Kamiakin MS, Finn Hill MS) and shared ideas with the Rosa Parks Elementary E-prep chair.

We are now finalizing with Timberline staff the first list of supplies to purchase for this year. It should cover canopy tents, additional sanitation and student health supplies, tarps and more. Plus we will be building a plan for the following years.

And you? Do you have a plan? Do you have some supplies at home? Work with your student to make sure your home is supplied in case of an emergency. The city of Redmond provides great information (https://www.redmond.gov/500/Get-Redmond-Ready) and don’t hesitate to contact us if you’ve any questions - eprep@timberlineptsa.org.

Timberline Service Club

The Timberline Service Club is a PTSA-sponsored student organization that promotes leadership through service in our local and global communities. Students will participate in initiatives that expand their understanding of the challenges others face and work with each other and community members to address those challenges.

The club is open to any student who expresses interest by submitting an application by Friday, February 21. We will accommodate as many students as possible and are looking for students who are committed to the program and will be able to participate for the remainder of this year. Meetings will be every other Wednesday after school for one hour, beginning March 4.

Students this semester will have the opportunity to name the club, design/choose a logo, discuss club governance and participate in service.

Applications are available here and in the main office. Completed applications may be submitted by email or returned to the office. Questions? Please email serviceclub@timberlineptsa.org.

Navigating the LWSD Online Tools

Can't remember what fees you've paid? Forgot your student's bus number? Need to register your student for school sports? Wondering how to check your students grades?

The Lake Washington website has answers to all of your questions and more but the online tools can be very confusing, here is a short article on where to get answers quickly.

First, head to the main LWSD website: http://www.lwsd.org. Once there, look at the menu across the top of the page. At the top right corner, there is a small globe drop-down menu - this allows you to view the website in your chosen language! Your next option on the top menu is STUDENTS & FAMILIES. Click that drop down menu and your first choice at the top of the list is FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES. This option will open a new page with all of the tools that parents need to successfully navigate the website and get many of your questions answered!

To get started, it is definitely worth your time to familiarize yourself with all the available tools by clicking on the white box labeled DOWNLOAD GUIDE TO PARENT LOGINS. This at-a-glance guide shows you exactly how each tool is used and how to easily gain access and create safe passwords. From this page, you can also explore the many tools offered by simply clicking on the colored box link that you need.

Updates from the School

New Tardy Process

Regular attendance at school is essential to the academic success of students. Research has shown that student attendance, academic success, and attendance patterns that start as early as 1st grade can have a major impact on student behaviors. Students are less likely to engage in risky behaviors when they regularly attend school and class. Tardy behaviors have improved with most students at this point in the year; however, the school continues to see some students repeating this behavior.

To help improve this, the school has created a new tardy policy that will be enforced moving forward. The policy is as follows:
  • Being tardy 3 times will result in a student filling out the “Student Tardy Reflection Form”. The purpose of this is for the student to recognize the behavior and set goals to eliminate it moving forward.
  • 5 times will result in detention/community service and parent contact.
  • 8 times will result in detention/community service and parent contact.
  • 10 times will result in an unexcused absence and parent or guardian meeting.

Coronavirus Bulletin

The Coronavirus is fast becoming a global health crisis. While there has only been one confirmed case in Washington and zero in the Lake Washington School District, we want to keep you updated on what the district is doing and how you can best stay healthy. Best practices always includes conscientiously washing hands and keeping students home if they show signs of illness. Please read further on the district website regarding specific information from the district as well as the Washington State Department of Health. Stay healthy Timberwolves!
