 "Surfers communicate with nature in a profound way. They feel the magic and carry it with them. They are actively rebellious and strongly individualistic. I wanted to photograph what happens to the surfer when he gets out of the ocean, when he crosses the Pacific Coast Highway."

The importance of the sea in maritime communities is evident in the work of three painters: Alex Weinstein, Wendy Stillman, and Marlene Yamada. Their work spans from abstract to representational, and the idea of ocean is represented through specific cultural references, philosophical theories about nature and beauty, and the physicality and motion of water.
