“For a long time now I have tried simply to write the best I can. Sometimes I have good luck and write better than I can.”

It recognises the best books by Australian women, both fiction and nonfiction, and it raises the profile of women writers, celebrating their achievements and promoting a full range of women’s stories and ideas.

In February, the 2020 Stella Prize Longlist was announced. The titles include The Weekend by Charlotte Wood, See What You Made Me Do by Jess Hill, Here Until August by Josephine Rowe and This Is How We Change The Ending by Vikki Wakefield. The 2020 Stella Prize Shortlist is announced in March.

The hustle and bustle of life can bring about a longing to take a journey or go on a trip. There is no better way of doing that, than to take some time out on a Sunday afternoon and read a good book. We have compiled a list of award-winning titles to provide you some inspiration.
Book Groups Reaction of the Month
In Siberia by Colin Thurbron

A traveller's tale that leaves one wondering what has happened in the ensuing twenty years since it’s been written. Have the years been kinder? Have the small settlements died out?  Is the pollution still as bad or is it being addressed?

‘Out of sight, out of mind’ covers an area of many miles and eight different time zones. We did have a good discussion and found the whole mystery of Siberia fascinating. We did wonder if we will ever see it as a modern land and not so mysterious and full of prison camps of all types.

We gave the book 4.5 stars.

The Girl They Left Behind
by Roxanne Veletzos

Inspired by the author’s true family story of survival during the Second World War, Natalia’s story is an unforgettable portrait of the triumph of the human spirit.

On a freezing night in January 1941, a little Jewish girl is found on the steps of Bucharest. Placed in an orphanage, a wealthy childless couple adopts her and name her Natalia. As she adapts to her new life, she all but forgets the parents forced to leave her behind.
As Natalia grows older under Soviet occupation, her former identity begins to pierce the surface of her everyday life. This leads to a discovery that will change her destiny. When she meets Victor, an important official in the Communist regime, they begin a passionate affair despite overwhelming obstacles and her lover’s dark secrets.

When the opportunity for Natalia's one-time chance at freedom arises, Victor is determined to help her escape, even if it means losing her. Natalia must make an agonising decision: remain in Bucharest with her beloved adoptive parents and the man she loves, or seize the chance to live life on her own terms and to confront the painful enigma of her past.
