The View from Shake Rag Alley

February 2020

Notice anything different about this picture of our Lind Pavilion? We have a new view since the removal of a dying ash tree that used to stand at the intersection of Commerce and Doty streets and Highway 23. The City of Mineral Point Tree Committee met in August to review and approve its removal. Thanks to all who assisted with this project.
GARDEN EXPO
Make time to escape this week and visit the Shake Rag Alley booth at Wisconsin Public Television's Garden & Landscape Expo. Better yet, why not volunteer? In exchange for just 2-3 hours of your time, you'll enjoy free admission to the expo, which is guaranteed to make you forget winter while you're inside the Alliant Energy Center, and will give you a chance to chat with enthusiastic and curious art and garden makers!

DRIFTLESS POETS EXHIBIT & OPEN MIC
Just in time for Valentine's Day, the Driftless Poets Workshop invites you to fall in love with poetry by enjoying an exhibit of members' work and joining them on Thursday, February 13, for an open mic night from 7-9pm at Cafe 43. The public is invited to sign up to share five minutes of poetry or prose, or to just come and listen. Refreshments will be available to purchase from the café.
Shake Rag Alley hosts the free monthly Driftless Poets workshop for local and aspiring poets. Members take turns leading the workshops, which provide a forum for poets to share their work and learn from one another.

Poets with work on display at Café 43 from now until the evening of the Open Mic are: Kevin Clougherty, Kate Franzmann, Doug Hansmann, Gary Jones, Susan Krause, Marilee Mulligan, Justin O'Brien, Lyric Ozburn, Nancy Schmalz, David Southward, Jacquelyn Thomas, and Etienne White.
WINTER WRITERS READING SERIES: Margaret Rozga
Join us on February 26, from 7-9pm in the Lind Pavilion at 411 Commerce St., to hear Margaret Rozga, Wisconsin Poet Laureate, read from and discuss her work. A life-long Wisconsin resident, Margaret Rozga lives in Milwaukee. She earned her BA at Alverno College and an MA and PhD in English at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. An emeritus professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha, she continues to teach a poetry workshop for Continuing Education at what is now the UWM-Waukesha campus. Rozga's poems draw on her experiences and interests as an educator, avid reader and researcher, parent, and advocate for social and racial justice.
SAVE THE DATE: April 25 - Claudia Rankine's NEA Big Read Keynote
Shake Rag Alley is honored to be awarded an NEA Big Read grant and looks forward to reading Claudia Rankine's Citizen: An American Lyric with our community in April. Together with our partners at the Mineral Point Public Library and Mineral Point School District libraries, we chose Citizen from among more than 30 books for its use of poetry and art to explore the impact words have on concepts of identity and inclusion.

Copies of Citizen will be distributed at the
Big Read Launch Event, Saturday, April 4, beginning at 10am at the Mineral Point Opera House, 139 High St. Book-related events and discussions will be scheduled throughout April as we prepare for a Keynote Address by the author herself on Saturday, April 25, at 7pm in the Mineral Point Opera House.

Mark your calendars now and plan on joining the community conversation! #readwithmp
SPRING GARAGE SALE DONATIONS
As daylight hours lengthen and you dream of spring cleaning, let your mind wander toward items you might contribute to our Spring Garage Sale, April 17-18. Though we doubt we'll see another four-foot-tall rabbit, we are always happy to accept your generous donations of amazing treasures! This annual fundraising event helps make it possible for Shake Rag Alley to continue offering workshops and preserve our historic campus.

We will begin collecting donations of household and collector items, art supplies and materials during scheduled times in April, but if you need to make prior arrangements, just let us know.
