A Note from Tia
Hey <<First Name>>
As business owners, we are faced with difficult decisions every single day. It is an exciting process to create something on your own, but the fact is that none of us are truly alone or can survive without support and guidance. At some point we all need the help of others to create a successful and sustainable business. In fact, the sooner the better.
A few months ago I was presented with a business decision and I was unsure of how to proceed. I wanted to make the most educated decision I could for my business. I reached out to a few people I look up to and trust to help guide me in the right direction.
Through that process, I spoke to many entrepreneurs who were further along in their careers than I. One, in fact who I very much look up to for what she has built; Her advice was exactly what I needed at the time. In the process of receiving her advice I let her know that what I could truly use at the moment was a sustained mentorship relationship. Since then, we’ve set up weekly chats, and I can rely on her to have a deeper understanding of my growth, challenges, and the Big Picture. It has been an invaluable experience thus far, and I feel I have so much more clarity.
Mentoring is a responsibility, a commitment and requires valuable time from both parties. But, if you are to find the right mentor who can help guide you and bring value to your business, it is hugely rewarding.
Why is a mentor important?
Mentors can help provide information and knowledge. They can help you on your path to personal and professional growth. Not only can they show you where your strengths are but where your faults may be and help you improve upon those.
How do you go about finding a mentor?
If there is someone you admire, express interest and just ask! Whether in person or through email, let them know what you admire them for and that you’d be interested in learning for them. Understand that their time is valuable and mentorship is not only about what you get but what you give. It’s always helpful to understand your goals and set clear expectations together.
How should you work with your mentor?
A mentor can come in many ways but I recommend setting up a call or in-person chat at least once a month to get the most value out of your mentor.
In the coming weeks, I'll be exploring more about how we in the Freelancing Females community can deepen one-on-one relationships so we more experienced entrepreneurs can elevate those just starting their journeys, and the most seasoned of us can share our wisdom and benefit from the fresh perspective of wide eyed beginners. We all have somewhere we are going, and I know we can get there together.
