Grants

Sorrento has been successful in the BRP Powercraft Equipment Grant through SLSA. We will have a new Can-Am Defender HD8 PRO coming our way to replace our old atv.

A big thank you for all those involved in pulling the grant application together.

SORRENTO SURF LIFESAVING CLUB’S NEW SPONSORSHIP!

Redimed along with their sister clinic Mole Patrol – Skin Cancer Clinic has formed a partnership with the Sorrento Surf Lifesaving Club WA and together we aim to promote the Sun Smart message.
Mole Patrol will be providing the opportunity for members and their families to come down to the surf club and have their skin checked by one of their highly trained practitioners!
These on-site clinics will be held on the 25th and the 28th of March 2020 – you will be able to make your booking using the links below.

Wednesday - 25th of March
Saturday - 28th of March

All you need to do is bring in a valid Medicare Card and the whole service will be bulk billed! This includes skin checks, biopsies and even cryotherapy!
Australia has one of the most staggering statistics for skin cancer in the world.
  • 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70.
  • Around 80% of newly diagnosed cancers every year are skin cancers.
  • More than 750,000 Australians are treated for one or more skin cancers each year
  • A common misconception is that skin cancers will only effect the older population – but in fact melanoma is most commonly found in ages 15-29.
The Mole Patrol difference –
We understand that everyone is busy, yet want that peace of mind. Mole Patrol aims to make looking after one’s skin as convenient as possible. Our on-site skin clinics offer online bookings; a paperless system; quick and efficient checks as we understand that time is precious; and referrals to GPs/specialists if necessary.
We hope that these skin check clinics will be well supported by the club members and their families and hopefully we will need to book some extra dates to ensure that we see as many people as possible to get that peace of mind or to get an early problem picked up and treated.

Regards,

Gary Buckenara

Youth
Have-a-go at Surf Skis

We had a fantastic turnout of youth, (over 30 x U14 members), on the pristine, calm waters of Hillarys boat harbour, for the annual Have-a-go at Surf Skis day. The session is an introduction to surf skis for this age group, who then have the chance to continue with 6 formal lessons, which may lead into joining the Sunday morning youth surf ski development squad.

The Sorrento surf ski fraternity is an amazing group, comprised of all ages and abilities and people who are always available to assist, with this session being no exception. Thank you to Les Goodliffe who, is one of our youth development squad coaches, our magnificent age managers Greg Belmont, Dean Solly and Jeremy Stevens, some of our senior mentors, Norm, Bernie, Chris, Tim and Jason and finally our youth mentors Billie Armstrong (U17), Josh Float (U15), Harry Abrahams (U17) and Ben Cottrell (U15). Special thanks to Tim Kelly, who towed the ski trailer and led the loading and of course Ronnie for transporting the boards to and fro.

The surf ski day is one of the many opportunities that youth are provided with at our mighty club. This season they have also tried out surf boats, IRB’s, an Advanced Beach Sprint Session as well as the usual boards/swim/sprint/flags/ironman training, and the chance to gain certification in SRC, Bronze, 1st Aid, which ultimately leads them into donning the attractive red and yellow and volunteering for patrol.

Sunday Morning Youth Session
We also held our regular Sunday morning youth session at Hillarys which meant that the youth, who were not trying out surf skis at any given time, did some board training as well as some swimming.

As usual we had youth scattered across the Sorrento and Hillarys shores, with about 50 at Hillarys for both the surf ski session and the usual Sunday morning activities, as well as some on patrol, others working as age managers to various nippers groups, some providing water safety to nippers groups, some on the IRB’s, others doing Ironman training and Beachie training, or with the surf boats.

Surf Rescue Champions
As always our superb R & R teams were successful at the SURF RESCUE CHAMPIONSHIPS (R&R, BELT RACING & RESCUE TUBE RESCUE) which were held at Mullaloo last Saturday the 15th of February. Our club was successful across all divisions, and in relation to our youth the results were:

Fantastic effort people.

Club champs
Well done to all youth who headed to our wonderful shores on Saturday morning to participate in our senior club champs. Thank you to all those involved in providing such an event. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes and it is much appreciated.

YIPS points
The youth incentive programme has proven popular once again and I would urge everyone to register, if they haven’t already done so, and send in all points gained for the season thus far. Please email me
admin@jarot.com.au. Anne-Marie and I are meeting this week to collate a list of those registered, which I will send out so that you can let me know if you have registered, but your name is not on the list. We will then collate points, which I will send out individually, to make sure they tally with your own. I had a couple of parents ask me about various points and activities, on Sunday, and thus I will have a look at the point system and clarify any categories that are unclear.

Youth newsletter
Each week I email out a newsletter that is youth specific. Please let me know if you or your youth – aged between U14 and U19 - are not receiving this email and send me your details. Whilst, some weeks, the newsletter may be light on information, or not exist at all, it is still important that all youth, and parents of youth receive this newsletter as it contains information specific to our magnificent youth community.

Youth end of season wind up: Sat 21st March
Please save the date of Saturday the 21st of March for our annual youth windup. At this event we have some form of activity, with past years involving lawn bowls and ten pin bowling. We then bus the youth back to the club (booked for 5 to 10pm) where parents and siblings are invited to join us for paella, short speeches, awards and medals. Woodside Nippers

This seems to be a common thread in the Junior section of the newsletter each week on how impressed and inspiring it is to watch our athletes compete for mighty mighty Sorrento and on the weekend  it was the same story!

Congratulations to each and every one of you who had a crack with team green on the weekend at the state qualifiers. I asked each and every one of our athletes before we roared the song to compete THE SORRENTO WAY, what’s the Sorrento way you ask ? Well its doing the best you can, putting it all on the line, being a good sport and remembering to enjoy yourself with your mates on the beach!

Boy did our team green deliver on all those requests, we exposed to positives and negatives across the beach as it is normal with these huge events but our crew rolled with the punches as well as anyone could expect them too.

Thank you to every athlete that put on the green and white cap on the weekend I’m super proud of the efforts you put in and you should be too regardless on whether you qualified or not. I would also like to thank our passionate and supportive parents for being there not only for your own children but also encouraging and supporting the rest of the team, then helping in packing unpacking boards, cleaning boards and also putting up and taking down tents. Thanks a million for your involvement!

To our superstar Senior Age Managers and the assistant Age Managers you guys rock. All your guidance and commitment is without fault. Thank you to our water safety volunteers, your involvement along with our officials makes it possible for team green to compete!
We have some super club members that give up their times on the weekends without any children involved in the program at all. Hopefully I am not forgetting anyone but to Garry Bunford (carnival referee) Roger Nowell and Janie Boyle (arena referees) and Ian Smallwood (arena starter) thank you for your commitment to surf and your commitment to the our wonderful club.

I would also like to say a big well done to our Juniors that completed at the R&R States on Saturday too! Congrats to the coaches and athletes for the brillant performance. Thank you to Theresa and all the other coaches for their commitment.

This weekend we will have the full crew back at Sorrento so hopefully everyone is looking forward to getting back to some normality for a week at least.
Post’s about training sessions will be put up on the Junior Facebook pages and age group communication emails so please keep an eye out so you’re up to speed on what’s available and when it’s on.

Have a great week and see you at the beach!
