THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF DEMOCRACY
States are already making their big choices for 2020. That means dozens of primaries and caucuses with national implications, each dependent upon a state's unique demographics. With that in mind, USAFacts created the Democracy Demographics so you can learn about each state during the primary season.

Curious about how many delegates are available in each contest? It has that. Or how states voted in the last five presidential elections? Yep, it has that, too. But beyond voting, what's the unemployment rate in all 50 states? How does the racial makeup of the nation compare to that of Nevada—the next state holding caucuses—or to Super Tuesday states like Maine and North Carolina? We have those numbers.

You can also see how many people are employed in each industry compared to national averages. Look at these metrics to understand what drives a state's economy.

And while you're at it, learn more about your own state. For example, are average wages on par with the national median of $38,640? Louisiana's median wage is $5,250 lower than the nation overall; meanwhile, Colorado's median wage is $3,670 higher.

But that's just a small taste of what's in the Democracy Demographics. Use it to understand what makes each state tick as the nation moves through this election year.

STATE VOTING RATES
Go even deeper with state demographics using our voting rate data. Get the numbers on how many Americans register versus how many turn out to vote. The data shows how rates fluctuate by race and age, plus differences between midterm and presidential years.

Some of the differences between states in registration and voting rates are quite interesting. Take West Virginia, where 64% of the population is registered to vote, yet only 51% voted in 2016. But in Wisconsin, 76% of people were registered to vote, and 71% of them voted.

NEVADA'S UP NEXT
Finally, with the Nevada caucuses this Saturday, February 22, here is a snapshot on voters in The Silver State.
