The Walk: A Global Citizen Event

Opening this week! Get your tickets now for this moving performance, not to be missed!

Global Citizen Events is proud to present the local première of The Walk, February 19-29 at Theatre Kelowna Society’s Toolbox Theatre at the Rotary Centre for the Arts.

This play, written by Catherine Cunningham-Huston, explores the haunting, sometimes agonizing, stories of trafficked girls and women as three wildly incompatible individuals—a social activist nun, a neurotic writer, and an out-of-work film director—grapple with how to stage a production about global sex-trafficking. Kim Fournier directs the cast of nine actors and a drummer. The project is a co-production that includes Moondog Theatre, Theatre Kelowna Society and Fred Skeleton Theatre Company.

The Walk is a part of Global Citizen Events’ annual initiative to promote the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. Global leaders convened to create the 17 Goals, which incorporate 169 targets to achieve by 2030. Goal 5: Gender Equality, Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions specifically mention human trafficking in hopes it would become a priority for countries and citizens around the world.

After each performance of The Walk, a local NGO will be on hand to discuss its efforts to combat human trafficking.  Support these local groups working towards women's rights and gender equality. You can learn more about the Play and the organizations, as well as purchase tickets by visiting http://trellis.org/the-walk. Single tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for students and seniors.

An Evening of Sustainability

Global Citizen Events is proud to present NOW is the Time Sustainability Fair on February 26, 2020 5-7 pm and the Sustainable Development Challenge from 7-8:30pm at the Rotary Centre for the Arts. Entry for Okanagan’s first sustainability fair is free to the general public and open to all ages. Tickets for the Grand Finale are $10 and available at the Rotary Box Office.

In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 goals for a better world by 2030. The evening highlights solutions and needs brought forth by youth, charities, civic groups, and commercial enterprises to work towards clean water, clean energy, safe communities and habitats, and zero waste to build a better future for the Okanagan and everyone.

#NOWistheTime Sustainability Fair will feature the following local organizations working toward the #SDGs locally:

Capping the evening are ideas from Okanagan youth. The Sustainable Development Challenge Grand Finale event is certain to inspire and energize you, and it only takes a $10 ticket to support our student finalists and see what amazing projects these young teams have to pitch to the judges.

February 20th is Global Music Fest– a night of live music and global awareness!

Danny Michel is an award-winning Canadian multi-instrumentalist of significant talent. After all, it takes some musician to earn praise from David Bowie.

If you were to attach a genre to Michel’s work, you could select from rock, pop, folk, world or even classical, such is the diversity of his sound.

Michel’s own self-described musical A.D.D. has kept his music fresh for decades. His thoughtful lyrics and charming performances have earned a devoted fan base, multiple nominations for JUNOs, The Polaris Prize, CBC’s "Heart Of Gold", and most recently winning the CFMA's "Producer of the Year" and "Oliver Schroder Pushing the Boundaries" awards. On February 20, 2020, Michel is bringing his unique brand of music to the Mary Irwin Theatre at the Rotary Centre for the Arts. This show follows a sold-out gig at the Mary Irwin in 2012 and a sold-out performance at Lake Country’s Creekside Theatre in 2018.  View Danny Michel's video here.

Advance tickets are $34 for adults and $26 for students. Door tickets, if available, will be an additional $3.Tickets at rotarycentreforthearts.com

Thank you for another successful Taste of Home!

Global Citizen Events was proud to host Taste of Home on February 1, 2020.

Taste of Home is a part of Global Citizen Events’ annual initiative to promote the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. Global leaders convened to create the 17 Goals, which incorporate 169 targets to achieve by 2030. Goal 16 recognizes that prejudice and insecurity have their origins in a lack of understanding among groups who may have little or no contact with one another, and who may lack opportunities to learn about the challenges and the life stories of their fellow neighbours. Learning and appreciation for others come through encouraging dialogue and respectful discussions as well as creative ways to stimulate heart-felt change.

Thank you to the Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada for their support of this event.
