Life or Death
<<First Name>>,
"Choose life." The book of Deuteronomy concludes with a dramatic and personal invitation, presented as a choice between two paths. One path leads to life. One path leads to death.
One implication of God's invitation here is that we have some degree of agency. We have the power to shape what happens next. We can choose. It may not feel like we have all that much control over our lives, given all the forces at work within us and outside of us that seemingly predetermine our next steps. There is a degree of truth to that. Regardless, there are some things we can control. In some matters, we do have a choice.
What call do you hear in the words "choose life"? How can you tell when you or others are choosing life (or choosing death)—that is to say, what might you observe to be true about someone "choosing life"? What does it mean to choose life for yourself? To choose life for people who matter to you? To choose life for the world as a whole? To choose life for those who will come after us?
