The price is right – pricing strategies for your translation services
Tess Whitty will run a translation marketing workshop, “The price is right – pricing strategies for your translation services”, in Helsinki on Wednesday, 8 April 2020, from 14:00 to 16:00.

How do you set and get a fair price for your translation work? Here are some tips and strategies for finding the right price for your services and finding customers that want to pay your price. This session will discuss how to calculate your target rate, how to set minimum fees, rush charges and other extra fees, and how to deal with free tests. You will also learn strategies for how to negotiate rates, raise or adjust your rates, optimize with CAT tools and develop the mindset to get paid what you are worth.

Venue: Kieliasiantuntijat office, 6th floor, Aikatalo, Mikonkatu 8, 00100 Helsinki, Finland
Time: 14:00 to 16:00

This workshop costs €25. Places are filling quickly, so please email info@nordicedit.fi by Wednesday 25 March to register.

Following on directly from the marketing workshop that afternoon, Tess Whitty will deliver a public talk at the Nordic Culture Point’s Tingsalen (Kaisaniemenkatu 9, Helsinki) from 17:00 to 19:00 on Wednesday, 8 April 2020:

The quirky Finnish business culture that baffles foreigners
With their sisu, Finns are great at business and getting things done. But Finnish business culture can surprise foreigners. Why is it so hard to get to know Finnish colleagues, for example? Tess Whitty talks about Finnish, British and American business culture and the importance of coffee breaks, saunas, working hours, words and much more. This evening event is free of charge and open to all. No prior registration is needed.

Punctuation points: parentheses or brackets, dashes or hyphens, colons or semicolons, periods or full stops?

Round Table by Nordic Editors and Translators at the University of Helsinki Language Centre

Jack (irritably): “… You can never stick to the point in any conversation!”
Algy (slowly): “No: it always hurts me.”
Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest

Whether punctuation makes you feel like this or it’s one of your favourite things, join the debate. With presenters born in the US and UK who work with English in a range of roles, we will cover how and when to use these different types of punctuation and the impacts they have.

The presenters are NEaT members Rebecca von Bonsdorff (English teacher and teacher trainer), Vanessa Fuller (English instructor and revisor), and Kate Sotejeff-Wilson (translator and editor).

The event is free and open to all.
Are you a planner?

Or are you perhaps very good at social media? Do you have an inside line on who would be a great speaker? Or maybe you just want to help. If so, NEaT’s new Events Committee needs you. If you have something to contribute to NEaT’s parties, professional events and perhaps eventually even a conference, join us! We need help in planning the details, from what food to serve to what speaking topics would be fresh and relevant.

Humanities and social science survey on editing and translation practice

If you work wholly or partially in the humanities or social sciences, our sister organization MET would love if you could complete this short survey. You can respond only once, and it is anonymous. Responses will be used for a peer-reviewed journal article and presented at a forthcoming METM. The survey is open until 31 March 2020.
METM20, Style Issue, Call for Proposals still open:
Deadline for submissions is 1 March

Style matters. At METM20, our sister association Mediterranean Editors and Translators want to hear what style means to you and why it matters to your work. They welcome proposals that respond to MET’s broad interest in helping language professionals improve the quality of their services and their ability to respond to clients’ diverse needs.

SENSE 2020 Conference, 5 to 7 June 2020
Registration now open!

A letter from the conference team:

Dear Member,

It’s the moment many of you have been waiting for: registration for the SENSE 2020 Jubilee Conference is NOW OPEN! And because it’s a special occasion – SENSE’s pearl jubilee – we’re pulling out all the stops. What started out five years ago as a one-day event has grown into a long weekend brim-full with workshops, presentations, social events and sightseeing. There’ll also be plenty of time for networking, of course, and for meeting old friends and making new ones (we are more international than ever this year). And if that doesn’t convince you, the magic words ‘borrel’ and ‘gala dinner’ will probably have you rushing towards the registration page right now.

The conference will be held in the beautiful city of Maastricht from 5 to 7 June. This includes a full workshop programme on 5 June. Check out the conference programme.

As a member of one of SENSE’s sister societies, you will enjoy the advantage of discounted pricing for both the early-bird (until 1 March) and the standard fees. The standard fees will apply to anyone who is not a member of a sister society. Once you have registered for the conference, you’ll receive a discount code that will enable you to sign up for one or two of the Friday morning and afternoon workshops at special rates.

The conference – which has as its theme ‘20/20 (Re)Vision: Honing our skills to meet market challenges’ – will offer a programme to suit all discerning linguists: writers, copywriters, translators, editors and teachers. It will have a truly international flavour, too, with delegates and presenters expected from 14 countries – from Finland to the northeast to Canada to the northwest!

Home to our 2020 Conference will be the stylish surroundings of the Amrâth Grand Hotel de l'Empereur, Maastricht, where you can stay overnight at favourable rates (book either directly with the hotel using the link on the registration page or via the likes of Trivago or booking.com). There are, of course, plenty of other places to stay close by, including AirBnB accommodations. As this is a jubilee celebration, you are welcome to bring guests and partners, and invite them to the meals and drinks on the Saturday and/or the post-conference lunch on the Sunday – and perhaps even tempt them with the range of interesting events on the sightseeing programme (soon to be posted on the conference website).
If you have any questions about the conference, please do not hesitate to contact us via conference@sense-online.nl.

We look forward to seeing you in Maastricht in June as – in the spirit of continuing professional development and lifelong learning – we hone our skills together!

The Conference Team
Lloyd Bingham, Ashley Cowles, Liz van Gerrevink-Genee, Marieke Krijnen, John Linnegar, Ken McGillivray, Nigel Saych, Theresa Truax-Gischler and Jenny Zonneveld

P.S. You may also want to check out the How to Register page.
