Hi there,

I hope this finds you well during this uncertain time. I've been following the news reports about the coronavirus (COVID-19), and here are a few local links that may be helpful to you:
  • The City of Mercer Island has issued an emergency proclamation toward ensuring local preparedness and quick action if special services, equipment, and supplies are needed in the event that the illness spreads to residents (so far, there have not been any confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Mercer Island).

  • The City's webpage dedicated to local coronavirus news and updates is located at www.mercergov.org/coronavirus.

  • The Mercer Island School District has also sent several recent communications in regard to the coronavirus risk. The letters address student attendance, cleaning of facilities, and contingency planning for the possibility of extended school closures. As of March 4th, the district has cancelled all off-island school field trips and after-school, evening, and weekend activities, with the exception of before-and-after school care (Kids Co.) and outdoor athletic activities.

  • The School District's website dedicated to providing updates on the coronavirus is located at www.mercerislandschools.org/coronavirus.
Please refer back to the City and School District's websites for further updates. If you're looking for more information and guidance in regard to the coronavirus, the most widely recommended resources include the CDC and Public Health Seattle-King County websites.

On a related note, you might also be interested in checking out this website tracking the coronavirus created by Mercer Island High School junior Avi Schiffmann. The site has become a leading coronavirus information source, and it's getting some impressive local and national news coverage. Here are some of the stories:
  • "High school student near Seattle builds website to serve as a leading place for coronavirus information" – Geekwire.com
  • "Teen creates site to track coronavirus, and millions of people are using it" – Today
  • "Q&A: Avi Schiffmann, the Washington state teen behind a coronavirus website with millions of views" – The Seattle Times
  • "Mercer Island teen's coronavirus website gets worldwide attention" – King5
In other news ...
  • Last week, Bennett's Bistro and Island Broiler permanently closed their doors on Mercer Island. Here are the details of those closures, along with a look back at the past five years of restaurant activity on the island.

  • Even with these closings, Mercer Island still has about 20 other local food and restaurant establishments. Check out our restaurant guide.

  • Jessi Bon, who was serving as the City of Mercer Island's interim City Manager, has been named permanent City Manager.  (Mercer Island Reporter)

  • Don't forget to provide your input on Mercer Island parks in this survey, which will provide important feedback to the City's new Parks and Recreation Commission as it begins a community-driven process to update the city-wide Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Plan (PROS Plan). The survey closes on March 9th. (Let's Talk Mercer Island)

  • Upcoming events include First Friday Art Walk (tonight); Storytelling at Island Books; "Soldiers in Petticoats and The Struggles of the Suffragettes" lecture at the Library; Bullying and Parental Support workshop; Noa in Concert: “Letters to Bach” at the SJCC; and more! (If you are interested in an event, please call in advance since some events may be cancelled for health and safety reasons.)
Thank you for reading and take care!

Best,

Erin
