If you are not a Juneau Yacht Club member but are interested in joining the Club, please come to one of our Thursday evening Socials as a guest of a member or come and introduce yourself to any Board member. We will be glad to make you our guest, show you around and discuss the benefits of joining. Under our Club Liquor License, non-members are not allowed to purchase alcoholic beverages but your host may treat you and you are welcome to join us for dinner as well. |

Juneau Yacht Club Work Party - This Saturday
|
|
|
The work party will be this Saturday, March 7. If you have time, please come down and help get the Clubhouse in top shape for the coming season.
We plan to start at 9:00 AM and work until at least 5:00 PM. We have lots of tasks to accomplish from new flooring in the Graham Room and other improvements in the bar to pantry shelving installation to cleaning chairs, tables and general cleaning to caulking and painting. There will be plenty to keep you busy! We will even supply some pizza for lunch!
We will need some tools so please bring your favorites like drills, screw guns and skill saws. One special need is for a portable table saw. If you can bring one, please let Chris Roust know by email at croust@gmail.com. Also may need a combination miter saw with carbide blade for cutting metal wire shelves.

At the February 27th Social, 42 Members and Guests attended with many enjoying delicious Loaded Baked Potato Soup prepared by Lisa Hickman. James Wycoff mixed some good Dark 'n Stormy cocktails. Potluck items included Tanner crab legs provided by potential member Wally Wallace (let's encourage him to join!), cookies, pecan pie, cheesecake, and ice cream bars. We had an informative talk by Bryan Caffrey of the National Weather Service on marine weather forecasting. The talk was arranged by the Southeast Alaska Sailing club (SEAS), several of whose members are also members of the Juneau Yacht Club.

Last month, Chris Donek, our Commodore, requested a survey to determine the needs and desires of the membership concerning the operations and activities of the Club. Fifty three members responded. Here are some of the highlights of the data we received along with a link to the detailed responses. Note that the link is a bit complex but, with persistence, you can see gross scores and individual comments from each member to each question.
SUMMARY:
1. 17 members were surveyed with paper surveys. They were presented with one question which was not included in the full results below. That question was how many Raft-Ups would you attend this year. Of the 7 people who answered that question, all 7 said 1-2.
2. On Newsletters, the most requested frequency was Once a Week with none of the answers saying they did not want to continue newsletters.
3. On Programs at monthly dinners, most would like to explore non-marine but Juneau-related topics.
4. On Special Events, over half wished to have a Commodore's Ball and almost half wanted a Fourth of July Party with strong support for a Princess Kathleen Party and some support for a New Year's Eve event.
5. On Classes, 39 were interested in attending sessions on a wide range of topics.
6. Most respondents did not know what the Sea Scouts program was and few were willing to help establish a local chapter.
7. Sixteen individuals were interested in taking US Coast Guard Auxiliary classes.
8. Sixteen individuals were interested in sailing or crewing on a sailboat.
9. Numerous individuals were interested in volunteering to cook for Socials and a few were interested in chairing a monthly dinner. Unfortunately, the survey results were anonymous so we were not able to contact those individuals. If you are willing to volunteer and have not previously signed up, please do so by clicking one or both of these links: Social Cook and/or Monthly Dinner Chair.
10. Many of the respondents said in their comments that they were happy with how the club is operating.
Comments and suggestions are always welcome. Please send an email to admin@juneauyc.org

JYC Coronavirus Precautions
|
|
|
Most local health care professionals are expecting this novel coronavirus to spread to Juneau and are especially concerned about its effect on people who are elderly or have a weakened immune system. The Juneau Yacht Club will be taking extra precautions in anticipation of the introduction of the virus to Juneau. Here is what we plan:
1. We encourage anyone with a potentially contagious disease, even a cold or seasonal flu or stomach flu, to please not attend JYC events until this novel coronavirus is declared to be under control. Covid-19, if it reaches Juneau, has a better chance of becoming serious in a person who already has a weakened immune system. Such individuals and anyone with chronic respiratory illness are encouraged to avoid crowds in all types of public events.
2. We encourage anyone who has not had a seasonal flu shot this season to get one now. A person with seasonal flu is more susceptible to catching the coronavirus and it will potentially be more serious in an individual with both illnesses. Pneumonia vaccine is also suggested.
3. We have placed disinfectant wipes in each restroom, the kitchen and the Graham Room. We encourage you to wash hands often and use disinfectant wipes after handing commonly touched objects like door handles, faucet handles, toilet flush levers, and bar or table surfaces. We will attempt to wipe them before and after use.
4. We have placed nitrile gloves in the kitchen for use by our volunteer cooks and food handlers and encourage their use.
5. And for the 38% of Americans in a recent poll who believe the coronavirus has anything to do with Corona beer, rest assured it has not and we will be serving Corona along with 12 other brands of beer at the Club!
